Hmmm…. I can’t see it: WHO is being intimidated? Apparently you think it may be nameless “whistleblowers” – but that doesn’t seem to be the case (insofar as the info that has come to light has either been manufactured for political gain (as in the Bengazi witch-hunt) or has been fully owned by the administration [...]
Jack Lorenz commented on the blog post Should Iowa lower its blood alcohol limit for drivers? 4 days, 13 hours ago · View
I don’t mind the feds pushing for more stringent drunk-driving standards, but I wish that they would apply an equal amount of attention to the distracted-driving scourge. Distracted driving due to text messaging or cell-phone use has displaced drunk driving as the #1 cause of motor vehicle accidents. For whatever reasons, our legislature has not [...]

It’s extremely difficult to intimidate someone if they aren’t aware that they are being intimidated. Intimidation can’t be retroactively generated. And where do you get the “impunity” observation? Doesn’t seem to me that anyone has gotten away with anything here.

“How can you argue anything when folks only see things from only one side?” That’s the only way that you can argue something, unless you enjoy arguing and are willing to play devil’s advocate for the sheer joy of arguing a point. “Ms. Bell and Mr. Lorenz still think that George W. Bush made the [...]

Jack Lorenz commented on the blog post Would Monica Vernon be a good Congressional candidate? 5 days, 12 hours ago · View
“Do you think Vernon would be a good Congressional candidate?” I don’t think so; unless she squares off against an equally unknown GOP candidate. To me, she is a complete blank and it seems that all too often in the past the Dems have failed by fielding a candidate that may be well known in [...]

Exactly who was intimidated here? To be intimidated, you need to have a bully in a position of power dangling some threat above your head threatening dire consequences against you if you do (or don’t do) one thing or another, as dictated by the bully . I don’t see that happening here… it was business [...]

Intimidation is an unfortunate side effect of our national security policy. Don’t believe me? Ask anyone who has held a Secret clearance (as I did) if during their term of service they didn’t feel intimidated by the security apparatus that is in place to detect, prevent, and plug information leaks, and by the legal consequences [...]

Whether or not “Dorman’s lens” is skewed left is immaterial, except as far as that observation supports the extreme right’s mantra that their political outlook is continually being misrepresented, corrupted and diminished by The Mainstream Media (to include, presumably, Murdoch’s contributions to that field). What is important from an electability challenge is whether or not [...]
Jack Lorenz commented on the blog post Rand Paul, the bridge builder, stops in Cedar Rapids 1 week, 2 days ago · View
To be a viable national candidate, Paul needs to attract many more independent voters than his opponent. Since most independents tend to be moderates (or, at least, are willing to use reason to weigh the relative merits of candidates instead of ideology), this seems unlikely unless he more aggressively works to slough off the present [...]

Which is worse: a “low information voter” or a “low information thinker”? The former is only dangerous one day every two years; the latter is a hazard to our country 365 days a year. If you have consumed and enjoyed the toxic products of the Murdoch corrupt media empire, you are now likely to now [...]
Jack Lorenz commented on the blog post Should Congress spare Head Start from sequester budget cuts? 1 week, 6 days ago · View
What does the data say about the effectiveness of Head Start? If it can be shown to have had a positive effect, it should be continued. Otherwise, it should be marked for discontinuation. Ideas that were necessary, helpful, and progressive for their time frequently result in the creation of programs that go on to outlive [...]
Jack Lorenz commented on the blog post Has your opinion of traffic cameras changed since they were installed? 2 weeks ago · View
“Has your opinion of the cameras changed since they were first installed?” No. I thought that they were an OK idea when they were introduced and, after several years of hearing from the scofflaws who rage against them (most of them who seem to be out-of-state motorists who want to traverse CR as quickly as [...]
Jack Lorenz commented on the blog post How much does King’s decision impact the U.S. Senate race in Iowa? 2 weeks ago · View
There’s nothing “out of whack” about it. The east half of the state tends to vote moderate-to-liberal and the west half tends to vote wingnut-to-conservative. However, more than 50% of Iowa’s population lives in the eastern half of the state- so when it comes down to a statewide contest between a moderate Democrat and a [...]
Jack Lorenz commented on the blog post After four years of drama, Supreme Court doesn’t retreat from civil rights 2 weeks ago · View
Thanks for identifying the non-participating judge. I wondered how there could be a decision of six judges when the Court has seven members. It would be interesting to know why Justice Zagar “took no part”. Is such non-participation at the individual justices’ discretion (as in a recusal announcement) or was he somehow incapacitated or otherwise [...]
Jack Lorenz commented on the blog post How much does King’s decision impact the U.S. Senate race in Iowa? 2 weeks, 1 day ago · View
If anything, it probably improves the GOP’s chances at taking the Senate seat. King is unelectable outside of sparsely-populated western Iowa, and he knows it.
Jack Lorenz commented on the blog post Do you support the Supreme Court’s ruling on lesbian spouses and birth certificates? 2 weeks, 2 days ago · View
This was an entirely predictable ruling. The fact that it is another unanimous high court decision is a smackdown of the notion promoted by Grifter Bob (and a few currently-serving House Republicans) that the Court can be manipulated through intimidation and political posturing. I am curious about one thing: the Iowa Supreme Court has seven [...]

I was giving you the benefit of the doubt by not explicitly stating that you were a loony fundamentalist. As I see it, there are two kinds of Iowa Republicans: loony fundamentalists, and those who kowtow to them out of fear that they will (horror of horrors) stay home in droves on the next election [...]

To people of the 1950′s, “Mr. Hathaway” was an impeccably-groomed middle-aged man with an impressive black eyepatch who appeared in ads hawking shirts. I suspect that this Mr. Hathaway would have been very chauvinistic indeed, had he been a real person. I know I would be, if I wore a black leather eyepatch.
Jack Lorenz commented on the blog post Should Medicaid funding be cut for Iowa abortion providers? 2 weeks, 4 days ago · View
Sure, why not cut it? It will only affect the very weakest in our society- and only by increasing their mortality rate through pregnancy-related medical crisis or suicide. Why wouldn’t any Republican think that this was all roses and sunshine for everyone? You kowtow to your loony fundamentalist base by cutting another venue for abortions [...]
