The tales the lion could tell, if only people could understand. Until then, he will silently stand guard. Guarding what I am not exactly sure, only he truly knows.

Reminds me of the Cedar Rapids City Council and James Prosser. They didn’t like his answers to flood details so they simply went around him and had Mr. Eyerly report directly to them.

Someone made the point amongst the bickering about the merits of having a casino in Cedar Rapids, that I think holds true. It won’t be as great as the Yes side says, or as worse as No side says. In my opinion, I don’t think it is a good fit for Cedar Rapids. It doesn’t [...]

Exactly Ken. This isn’t the title event.
Here’s my question, if Cedar Rapids get a casino license, it may release the proverbial flood-gate on licenses. I think it is naive to think that a Cedar Rapids casino would stay out of a campaign for a casino within 2 hours of Cedar Rapids.Mary Nelson commented on the blog post Riverside’s cash puts Just Say No Casino on defense 4 months ago · View
The Vote Yes website provided me with the reasoning I need to determine how I will vote. The market survey done in May of 2012 stated that Linn County governments as a whole would expect to earn $1.5 million dollars per year. That won’t go far in recouping the cost of wear and tear on [...]
Mary Nelson commented on the blog post Should banks being fined for federal violations be allowed to deduct fines on taxes? 4 months, 1 week ago · View
Either way the cost will end up on the consumer’s tab. Either through lost tax revenue or increased fees. There needs to be an alternative. Besides, in general doing business illegally and getting fined for doesn’t always equate to a net loss for a company. Insider trading can still be lucrative if you can handle [...]
Mary Nelson commented on the blog post CasinoClash ’13 update — Vote Yes lists investors, well, most of them – Updated 4 months, 1 week ago · View
I find it humorous that their website says 22 investors. For people trying to invest in a casino, you would think they would be better at numbers. “Steve Gray and Drew Skogman are leading a group of 22 investors, primarily based in Linn County,”
Mary Nelson commented on the blog post Is proposed 3 percent revenue donation from Cedar Rapids casino appropriate? 4 months, 2 weeks ago · View
A complete list would be nice. Everyone is harping on it’s the casinos that are funding the “No” movement. They need to realize this is nothing to them. They are saving their major influence for the Iowa Racing and Gaming Comm vote. I would assume that if the “Yes” votes wins, that it would be [...]

A simple way to help at least is to restrict fuel tax revenue received by cities for use on roads. Mayor Corbett was proud of admitting in a Gazette article that The FY13 Cedar Rapids city budget allocated 0% of their share of the fuel tax for its intended use, which is street and road [...]

I would like the city leaders of Cedar Rapids to decided what they envision for our city. Is the “Rochester South” that was hyped to allow PCI to rob the taxpayers and forever alter the traffic flow, or is the family friendly NewBoMarket, and New Bohemia, or is it the money moved from streets to [...]

So Cedar Rapids is a “Blue Zone” now. How does a casino fit in with that ideal of a healthy community?
Mary Nelson commented on the blog post Will Cedar Rapids landlord ordinance accomplish its goals? 5 months ago · View
It depends on what the goal is for the ordinance hopes to accomplish in reality. Is it to make landlords responsible for other adults who rent from them, people they may have as guests, or potentially have the city further the goals of the Affordable Housing Network, and raise revenues for the city/county then the [...]
Mary Nelson commented on the blog post Should the sale of toy guns be discouraged? 5 months, 3 weeks ago · View
Good Grief. There are more pressing issues today than toy gun sales. Should we consider cutting off the fingers of kids who pretend to shoot someone with their fingers while we are at it? No more water guns, water balloons (could lead to grenades following the logic of the argument). Playing with toys is an [...]

The law should be amended to read that gas tax revenue money must be used for its intended purpose as well. Currently there is no such requirement.
Mary Nelson commented on the blog post What do you think of the progress on Cedar Rapids flood protection? 5 months, 3 weeks ago · View
I am not surprised that the city council has taken a “built it and then must protect it attitude”. Flood Protection is far from their first priority. Giving tax breaks to buildings already under construction and demolishing buildings that have been rehabbed seemed to be more pressing issues.
Actions speak much louder than words.Mary Nelson commented on the blog post Is gun control debate appropriate in wake of Connecticut school shootings? 6 months ago · View
A few points to clarify my opinion: 1) The guns were stolen. Permission to use them during supervised target practice, is NOT permission to use them to shoot the owner and others. In general laws are designed to deter behaviors. People break laws due to ignorance, mental illness, or the desire of the action is [...]
Mary Nelson commented on the blog post Is gun control debate appropriate in wake of Connecticut school shootings? 6 months ago · View
This is not the time to talk about gun control or restoring the death penalty in Iowa. Laws made in reaction to specific events are usually flawed. Regarding gun control, you don’t have be able to purchase a gun to do something horrific like what happened in CT. You simply need access to guns. Someone [...]

Mary Nelson commented on the blog post Should Hostess workers have made more concessions? 7 months ago · View
The union workers made concessions across the board in 2004. Did the private equity fund and two hedge funds who were the most recent owners of Hostess really intend to run the company or loot it? Unfortunately the “pension” business model is outdated, but people working for Hostess (with 6 CEOs in the last 10 [...]

Seems like a great plan on the surface. I guess I am curious what happens to the people displaced who don’t pass the credit or background checks. Have thete been any cases of splitting up families or children/caregivers? It could be a case of simply moving the problems rather than trying to solve them.
