I agree with Jack. I don’t think I’ve been out much lately except to shovel snow or drive to work and then home again. It’s given me time to reflect on what Westdale is going to be like as an open air area this time of year. Vacant, I believe. Void of people moving from [...]

I think we’re past the discussion phase on this project. It will become a reality sooner or later. The main problem as I see it when I look at the overview plans is that in a climate as harsh as Iowa in winter, who wants to walk outside from store to store or get back [...]

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I had to be on the job today. I have to work on President’s Day as well. Aside from all that, I think the Iowa City School District is providing educational programs regarding Dr. King to educate why he is such an important figure to remember [...]
I’ve been to the small community events as well. The tickets are sold at the entrance to the serving area, whether it be the beer tent or the main food vendor. In addition, the volume of people is a small percentage of what you see at the state fair so it is easy to set [...]

I think they took it a little too far based on the next to nothing reactions outbursts from the like of Bo Panini (misspelled on purpose) and some player’s actions we’ve seen recently. The officiating of the game stunk, and we’ve seen a good deal of that lately. Wisconsin didn’t win that game by playing.
Regarding Roberta’s points above: 1) I agree, it deters theft 2) I disagree. If you don’t want to take cash, the handling on debit and credit cards is included in the cost of doing business, which is already absorbed by the customer anyway. 3) 50 cent tickets means the fair is wagering that you are [...]
Actually I’m an independent. I vote for the person and the ideals, not the party line. I voted for Bill Clinton, I’d vote for another Clinton. I voted against Bush every time. I voted against Obama every time. I think as a state, we’re doing better with Branstad than we ever had a chance of [...]

Tax revenue on tobacco products is reported to be down. Which means either less people are using them, or they are obtaining them somewhere else. If the state would like to tax a potential nicotine delivery system such as an e-cig, they might as well start taxing nicotine gum and patches the same way.

I’m wondering who forgot the parking for the large vehicles that bring the participants to town. Instead, they block off the road behind the convention center (between the convention center and I-380) and there are buses and trucks everywhere. That road becomes important when a train is blocking First Avenue in the middle of the [...]
In addition to any signage, I’d like to see a map posted online that details projects, anticipated start and finish dates, and the work to be done. The signs are OK, but after looking at one for 4 years, you got the message. I’m pretty sure signs are still up on Wright Brothers from work [...]

At least one can change the channel on the radio and avoid the music for now. Having to repeatedly watch the Christmas commercials during the game is sheer torture right after Halloween. Thank goodness for the DVR and the skip button. Then there’s the obligatory full mailbox of Christmas catalogs that head right for recycling.
John Phelps commented on the blog post Should e-cigarettes be banned for minors, taxed at higher rate? 4 months ago · View
The marketer should have come up with a name that did not include the word “cigarette” and there would have been no problem. It is a vaporizer, and if you like, a nicotine delivery device. I am not aware of any taxes on nicotine gum, but I’m not sure whether nicotine gum is available to [...]
