Just saw another piece, this one on The Atlantic, by Bruce Schneier http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2013/04/the-boston-marathon-bombing-keep-calm-and-carry-on/275014/ The money quote: Don’t glorify the terrorists and their actions by calling this part of a “war on terror.” Wars involve two legitimate sides. There’s only one legitimate side here; those on the other are criminals. They should be found, arrested, and [...]

I think we do the only thing we can: endure. We remember that we as a society prize certain things, and any reaction we have needs to bear those things in mind. Douthat is exactly right–things like this can happen no matter how secure we think we are.

Yup, still crazy. Also, how can you be a legitimate representative in a lawful republic if no one voted for you? That’s like me declaring my office to be sovereign territory and proclaiming myself president of my co-workers. Sure, I can say it, but 1) it has no force of law behind it and 2) [...]

Amazing. She’s bought into the Sovereign Citizens Movement, which believes each citizen is sold into slavery at birth to back the U.S. currency (among many other truly insane things).

Is it worth asking why a candidate would want to be associated with perhaps the most controversial law enforcement figure in America? I mean, Arpaio has been sued by the Justice Department, his jail was found cruel and unusual by two different courts, and he’s under investigation by the FBI for malicious prosecution of people [...]

A gift of $5.6 million from the estate of a Cornell College parent — one of the largest outright gifts in the history of the college — will go toward renovations of the Thomas Commons and endow a scholarship in the name of the donor’s daughter. The gift came from the estate of James Russell, [...]

Cornell College will hold a recognition ceremony as part of the 9/11 remembrance prior to Saturday’s 1 p.m. football game between the Rams and Macalester at Ash Park Stadium. Cornell’s athletic department will pay tribute to members of the military and military veterans, as well as local police, firefighters and ambulance personnel. A Cornell alumnus from the 1960s has pledged $100,000 to Cornell College to fund a program designed to teach students what it takes to lead. Tom Jarom ’66 , a member of the Berry Center for Economics, Business, and Public Policy advisory board and a life trustee of the college, was instrumental in establishing the Cornell LEADS (Leadership, [...]Jamie Kelly commented on the blog post Haus: Animal House and The Debt Ceiling Debate 1 year, 10 months ago · View
Bob Cute idea, but you’re making it sound like the blame is equal all around. It is not. Obama has increased spending 1.4 trillion since taking office. George W. Bush’s tax cuts, wars and other projects, increased spending by $5 trillion. If the Bush tax cuts were repealed, that would bring in $1.8 trillion in [...]

George, I’m all for positive development, but I don’t think 1,000 more surface parking spaces and a few dozen jobs are worth what the city is giving up.

It’s never been clear to me why, since the public utility companies have to get approval for rate increases, this is allowed. I’m not opposed to them making money, but why do they get to make an enormous profit increase on the backs of everyone else? Isn’t the point of a utility commission to keep [...]

This isn’t about not wanting to help. For me, it wasn’t even about not trusting the city council. It was about the wisdom of extending a regressive tax partly to pay for street repairs that won’t even last as long as the period of the sales tax.

It’s been nearly a week! Anyone still parked on side streets is now holding up getting the snow removed so other people can park there? That’s not very nice…
