We don’t know who did this, we can only speculate. If in fact it is a terrorist group, well then how do we respond? Maybe the way we respond will only lead to more tragedy. You can’t stop people who have a vendetta and if you respond with similar terror, you are not going to [...]

It is an invasion of my privacy, I have no control over how this information is used, even if I am not speeding or running red lights. I certainly would appreciate being able to face my accusers if I have been speeding on the spot, and the business of where you stop especially on a [...]
Steve Hanken commented on the blog post What’s the best location for a new Cedar Rapids rec center? 2 months, 2 weeks ago · View
So, when did the “Time Check” Recreation Center become the “Cedar Rapids” Recreation center? Since it is suppose to be in the area of Time Check, one must assume that is the approximate location of where it should be, let the people it is suppose to serve decide where that should be as much as [...]
Steve Hanken commented on the blog post Will you be voting in the casino referendum? 2 months, 2 weeks ago · View
Already voted No, and have never changed my mind over all the previous votes on gambling casinos here. I don’t care to make it easier for people to waste their money; I don’t find any of the jobs being offered as productive in a way that are good career building jobs; I really think there [...]
Steve Hanken commented on the blog post Cedar Rapids casino vote: picking winners and losers 2 months, 3 weeks ago · View
If someone was going to steal 30% of your business, wouldn’t it make sense to make a counter offer to change that? The suggestion that there might be a choice beyond a casino or nothing at all seems better than not making the offer. Let’s look at the facts, the Gazette does “polls” that really [...]
Steve Hanken commented on the blog post Does water park offer change your mind about Cedar Rapids casino vote? 2 months, 3 weeks ago · View
Already voted, but for sure, this does make a difference. I especially dislike the Mayor putting in his two cents worth to steer everything to favor the casino, this should be a vote that isn’t influenced by public officials, especially when they are elected. The people have the say, and that is where we, as [...]

Certainly this is different from the “rag tag” $23,000 campaign of the past, how else could it be? How many times does this have to be defeated before someone stops pushing for it? Each time the amount of money rises and we all get to pay for yet another election. Enough already! If it doesn’t [...]

I think you have some legitimate points, on the other hand, this is not the first time this ballot initiative has come before the voters and what really has changed? The studies don’t seem to show or have not been made to justify a casino, for or against; at least not independently. Certainly there will [...]

I think he is correct in what he is saying, unfortunate as it is. News papers used to provide a functional part of our daily lives, they have decided to throw in the towel because the medium has changed. They have allowed their staffs to decline into poorly trained and badly monitored scribblers, and done [...]
Steve Hanken commented on the blog post Should the Boy Scouts end their ban on gay members and leaders? 3 months, 2 weeks ago · View
Whatever the case maybe, at some point we can not protect everybody from everybody else based on the possibility something could potentially happen. Along with ending this ban on homosexual membership in the Scouts should also go all this religious crap that says a boy must believe in something! Why is that necessary? I also [...]
Steve Hanken commented on the blog post Is proposed 3 percent revenue donation from Cedar Rapids casino appropriate? 3 months, 2 weeks ago · View
So, you set up your non-profit with those who want gambling, then get them to agree with you that the absolute minimum is OK for the next ten years? Then you let the same “organization” make “demands” on the casino for increases, but only if the gross revenues reach a certain dollar amount, what a [...]
Steve Hanken commented on the blog post Are cemeteries an appropriate place for cell phone towers? 3 months, 2 weeks ago · View
There are cell phone towers in the Muscatine cemetery and as far as I can see they’re just that, cell phone towers on the edge of the cemetery. I don’t recall seeing any generators or such equipment and if they are there they could have been hidden in the tree line.
Steve Hanken commented on the blog post Are cemeteries an appropriate place for cell phone towers? 3 months, 3 weeks ago · View
Considering the money these things generate and the eventual end of lot sales it could be the cash flow to maintain cemeteries after they have reached capacity or are no longer generating enough money to maintain the grounds. If the lease is set up to be put into a perpetual fund for the maintenance of [...]

Todd fails to understand you don’t need a majority to get things moving in the House and Senate, I might remind him the reason both sides fail to compromise probably has more to do with trying to beat each side into submission rather than get anything accomplished. This goes for both sides. A handful of [...]

I believe Harken lost much of his original fire to be our Senator long ago, and as for Grassley, in reality he is a moderate Steve King, and almost as often an embarrassment to the state. Democrats will be hard pressed to field a candidate since they have so few stars among the people they [...]

Thanks for pointing out what is obviously something others are not thinking about. Certainly there is a point of no return on how we go about safety, and even though we have safety measures in place, does not deter someone who takes these measures into consideration. As the population grows, one would expect a certain rise in crime. When the trend is organic and grown closer to the people eating, the quality is higher, and the food looks and tastes delicious, seems obvious it is going to stick around. A 10 % a year growth rate in the food industry suggests the same thing. Once people learn how to cook for themselves and [...]
