  • lonhawk commented on the blog post 2014 is a cushion, but will Iowa land on it?   1 day, 6 hours ago · View

Meat and potatoes this season, chicken soup in 2014. Its hard to get excited while playing the same teams preseason year after year. Midwestern mid-major, UNI, Iowa State, and directional team (Northwest, Eastsouth, something something). How about playing a Utah, Boise State, Baylor, or a USC once in a while. If we win great, if [...]

The agony of that loss to C. Michigan was the fact we got to see that play 3 times and didn’t make a change on how we lined up for the play. Everyone (except apparently the coaches) saw that Iowa was loaded up on one side and had nobody to field a kick on the [...]

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post Stuck in neutral   1 month, 1 week ago · View

I got to agree with Max. To simple be satisfied with a “safe catch” at the college level is to completely surrender to caution. How many games have the Hawk’s lost to teams making big plays from special team’s returns? How many times do you see Iowa starting from inside the 20 or pushed back [...]

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post Iowa advances to NIT title   1 month, 2 weeks ago · View

I once commented that Iowa lacked mental toughness. I stand corrected on this postseason run. The officiating has been horrible both at Virginia and tonight. Iowa has kept their composure through these calls or lack of calls and continue to make shots. Iowa players are having fun and it shows playing a team like Bayler [...]

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post Woodbury, Clemmons step up big for Iowa   1 month, 2 weeks ago · View

Woodbury gave us a preview of next year and it’s an exciting future; Forget about the offense he supplied, his defense was great. Virginia was scoring at will inside with him out of the game but that stopped when he entered the game. He might not be a leaper but he is all of 7 [...]

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post Iowa notes: Gesell plays, May salute, NIT update   1 month, 3 weeks ago · View

To get a third game at home would be great, hope it happens for this team. The experience this team is gaining is priceless. Woodbury has emerged in postseason as a relentless worker, he’s making less silly fouls. McCabe has found his shot and Iowa’s defense has remained impressive. Next game will be against a [...]

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post Hlas: This season has no pity for Hawkeyes   2 months ago · View

Can anyone explain why in a meaningful tourney game the ref’s aren’t willing to check the video on a possible 3 second violation or the fragrant headlock and dragging of McCabe when I’ve seen. 10 to15 minute breaks by officials checking for such violations all season long. It didn’t help that Johnson and the BT [...]

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post Tough calls tough to take for Iowa   2 months ago · View

I have seen this for years from the “seasoned” BigTen refs (Valentine Hightower) just want to live long enough to see those guys retire. I call it the swallowing of the whistle. Almost all the fouls called on Iowa were questionable while nothing was called on M-State. This happened on a 5 minute stretch which [...]

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post Hlas: This season has no pity for Hawkeyes   2 months ago · View

Typical game good calls until about the 6 minute mark then the refs apparently had something else to do until the 1:40 mark. No calls no fouls no over the backs no anything being called except against McCabe. Poor guy cant get a call. Sorry just bitter when u see a ref looking right at [...]

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post My B1G selections: Burke is top player   2 months, 1 week ago · View

I can’t be mad a Dekker, I think his play is why we have a transfer from Wisconsin on our team. With him there the playing time at forward was going to be very sparse. There loss is our gain, hopefully.

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post Iowa’s interior posting big numbers   2 months, 1 week ago · View

Love the passing and unselfish nature of the post players. After watching the Northwestern game against Michigan State looks like Iowa should keep the same game plan. Iowa needs to pound the ball inside and play the defense they have all year.

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post Iowa’s Gesell likely to play this week   2 months, 1 week ago · View

Whatever Iowa get’s from Gesell will be a bonus, spelling Marble, shooting the three, coming off the bench to shoot free throws, it’s all good. Playing the point seems to have sharpened Marble’s game and right now I believe he is one of the leagues toughest matchups, even if people think he’s only third team [...]

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post Iowa reaches milestones but not yet finished   2 months, 1 week ago · View

Iowa won by 14 points, guess the better team won. Loved Iowa’s interior passing. Iowa’s interior players have improved more than I thought possible in one season. Gabe has been sensational. Earlier this year I cringed when he entered the game but now I can’t wait to see what he can do. Woodbury is showing [...]

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post Hlas: Oglesby goes from cold to cold-blooded   2 months, 1 week ago · View

He is such an important part of this team and even struggling coaches know all about him. When he’s “on” Marble can drive the lane and the defense can’t cheat and drop down on the post. He’s a better all-around player than Kingsbury was and can change a game like he did tonight. To many [...]

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post Iowa defense stops Purdue (with photo slideshow)   2 months, 2 weeks ago · View

Yes it was a win, but being played after the Penn State/Michigan masterpiece it felt more like a hang over. To be shooting this poorly, at home and basically unguarded at times, I don’t know what to make of it. Then we have the defensive breakdowns and missed one and one’s, it’s why Iowa is [...]

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post Iowa blows 19-point lead, NCAA hopes at Nebraska   2 months, 3 weeks ago · View

Please Justin Bieber hold your opinion of who has the better team until you play at our place, OK! Fair is fair, if you beat the Hawks or we don’t beat you by more than 4 points than you can spout off about being better. I’ll post after the game my acknowledgement of the Huskers [...]

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post Iowa blows 19-point lead, NCAA hopes at Nebraska   2 months, 3 weeks ago · View

I’m going to chalk this up to Nebraska having Iowa’s number for some reason since they joined the conference. Iowa can still win all their home games lose to Indiana but now need to win two tournament games. Still possible, or like you said beat Indiana at home. Not impossible but how this team loses [...]

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post Hawkeyes climb out of hole, bury Gophers by 21   2 months, 4 weeks ago · View

i DVRed the game and “The Walking Dead” as I was at work on Sunday. For the first 10 minutes I thought I had mixed them up. Iowa looked the role of the emotionless zombies with their season on the line. Then McCabe made the biggest shot of the game, a contested 3 pointer at [...]

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post Hello, my name is…RB Akrum Wadley   2 months, 4 weeks ago · View

This guy didn’t get an offer? Looks to have exceptional speed and fearlessness. Waits for his blocking to develop, a must at Iowa, and that leap over the defender was just plain sick. Can’t wait to see him in black and gold, but most importantly he wants to be at Iowa.

  • lonhawk commented on the blog post Iowa assistant Wilson hired by Rutgers   3 months ago · View

For all the fans who think this staff had gotten comfortable here’s a chance to bring in fresh and hungry up and coming coaches. Will Kirk do this or will he go with”comfortable choices” like Davis again?
