I’m pretty close to having my account shuttered, but I’ll press on anyway. I noticed that Ferentz said Jason White remains #2 in his post-game comments. Why does he continue to say this? It seems to insult everyone (fans & media intelligence, Jason himself, and the other RBs). My arm-chair psychology is that Ferentz isn’t [...]

Nebraska has home and home dates scheduled with Southern Miss & Fresno St (they actually played FSU two weeks ago). These two would actually be respectable replacements for years when Iowa drops their second BCS game. I don’t think it will happen either, but who knows. No one believes me but if we have superconferences [...]

I think your reported earlier that the victory over Alabama was 2007, not 1997 as listed here. 2007 makes it seem more ‘relevant’ I guess.

The Tarp for Edds move is especially tough. The came into Iowa together in 2006 (Edds played as a true frosh, Tarp redshirted) and both played LB. My point is they would have really known each other pretty well.

I’m curious about Iowa wanting to wait to take Fuller’s commitment. Sounds like they have offered him, but does that mean they aren’t completely sure they want him? Waiting to see who else might accept their offers? I guess I didn’t realize they did it this way, I figured if they offered a guy, it [...]

Marc, I’m not that optimistic. I really hope the Hawks turned the corner, but I’m a glass half-empty type of guy so I can’t forget the first three quarters of last week. And its not like Pitt is some great team either. I just haven’t seen enough to say this is a good Iowa team. [...]

  • Garth Algar commented on the blog post Chuck Neinas: Headhunter who may head Big 12   1 year, 8 months ago · View

How ironic, had never heard of the guy, but recently read the amazing The Atlantic Monthly article about the NCAA (very long, but very informative for any college sports fan: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/7/?single_page=true). Neinas is mentioned only a few times, but I guess he was instrumental for the NCAA in college football first being on tv, but [...]

  • Garth Algar commented on the blog post Poll: What will be Iowa State’s 2012 conference home?   1 year, 8 months ago · View

I think you’re right about the Big East/12 being semantics. On the TV contract, I would imagine FOX and ESPN have some right to cancel or reduce if changes are made (i.e. Texas and Oklahoma are replaced with West Virginia and Rutgers). I might be dreaming, but I also thought there was some rule that [...]

I think Castillo is serviceable, definitely not terrible, but he doesn’t appear to be the athlete that Hyde is.

The other thing that I felt this foursome provides is a little better run support. Seemed like a couple tackles for loss or short gains from Bernstine & Miller, something that was missing earlier.

  • Garth Algar commented on the blog post Iowa State 35th in college football attendance   1 year, 8 months ago · View

Amen. Even the % of capacity stat is flawed, because places like Michigan decide they’ll sell 2000 more tickets than their official capacity and so they are at like 102% or something ridiculous.

  • Garth Algar commented on the blog post Not everything worked   1 year, 8 months ago · View

Well said Marc. The outcome puts some rose-colored glasses on it, but it was UGLY for quite a while. One thing that goes unmentioned has been penalties. Felt like an awful lot of critical penalties these last two weeks, which is somewhat uncharacteristic for Iowa. On the Hyde note, I don’t think they win this [...]

  • Garth Algar commented on the blog post Wednesday was Fran-tastic for Iowa fans   1 year, 8 months ago · View

I hope this is the start of something good. However I kind of wonder if the basketball program is almost as cursed as Iowa’s running backs. Jake Kelley’s mom dying, Anthony Tucker’s troubles, the Hubbard debacle (just to name a few) have all ruined Iowa careers too soon.

  • Just for some reference, NFL teams could have 90 guys on their roster when camp opened after the lockout. A guy by the name of Jalil Carter with 412 career receiving yards at Akron got a shot with the Rams. The Chargers signed a college free agent named Giovani Stanley. He had a whopping 2 [...]

I hope Ferentz gets asked about DB’s tommorrow. I thought they wanted to start the four best. Right now it doesn’t appear that Castillo is one of those. It would seem they’d be better off with Bernstine at CB, or moving Hyde back and having Miller at FS. I like Castillo, but he just seems [...]

I like this idea, Marc. From what I saw, Wisconsin was the only truly impressive Big 10 team this week. Illinois, NW, and MSU had big wins, but they were against pathetic teams.

Thanks Marc. I’m kind of with Sue-Don at this point. But maybe I’ll see you around in another incarnation.

  • Garth Algar commented on the blog post There’s good, there’s fumbles with Coker   1 year, 8 months ago · View

I know it was a triple OT game, but 35 rushes? Wow. I hope they can find a backup who can take a couple rushes or blitz pickups a game. The offense is sputtering, but without Coker I fear the wheels will fall off.

  • If you’ve followed this team very long, you knew what the decisions in these situations would be. While I would have liked to see a short pass to McNutt and let him see what he could do at the end of regulation, I knew it wouldn’t happen. While I thought Coker could have gotten the [...]

  • Garth Algar commented on the blog post No. 2 running back sort of an open deal   1 year, 8 months ago · View

I get the feeling they want anyone but White to win the job. They gave Johnson eight carries, and White 1. its not like White has a lot of game experience either, and at that point they knew McCall was out of the picture. That said, i don’t know what they think of Johnson either. [...]

  • Garth Algar commented on the blog post Eight Iowa men’s basketball games not televised   1 year, 8 months ago · View

Sorry Mike, but I don’t think you can have it both ways. The conference sets the schedule for conference games so that they can fit every game on TV. This leads to some undesirable start times. The schools, I believe, set most of their non-con schedule. They can schedule whenever they like but then are [...]
