Fire investigators say seven people were able to escape early Sunday morning after a fire broke out on the second floor of an eight-unit apartment complex.
The building, at 2931 6th Street SW in the Gateway Gardens apartments, had working smoke alarms and investigators say that helped people get out when the call came in before 3:30 a.m. Sunday.
Greg Buelow of the Cedar Rapids Fire Department said only three of the eight units were occupied at the time but the alarms allowed adults to gather children “between the ages of one and four” and escape to safety outdoors.
Multiple fire trucks worked the scene before departing around 4:30 a.m. Buelow said, at this early stage, the investigation continues to pinpoint a cause.
