A Gazette letter writer suggests that contributions to political candidates should be taxed — at a rate of up to 55 percent.

“This would reduce the terrible TV ads and the deficit,” wrote Herm Reininga of Cedar Rapids. “All politicians wages are taxed at 35 percent minimum (no deductions), the president at 55 percent since he receives free airfare and a private plane. All gifts to politicians, such as $40,000 plate dinners, golf games, sporting events, Hollywood events, should be considered taxable to the politician. This would reduce the special interest groups’ ability to influence politicians.”

Do you agree? Should political contributions be taxed? If so, what should the rate be?

  1. This person is quite obviously against free speech. The government already spends and wastes way too much money – it doesn’t need more. People who can’t turn the channel or ignore political drivel should not be allowed to vote.

    • Sure, Gary… because Money = Speech. (not)
Spends too much? Maybe, maybe not. Wastes? Sometimes.
Of course, nothing in the letter mentions anything about the writer being “against free speech.” Way to pull stuff out of your E. a. asinus. Have some more tea.
