Retail experts predict today will be the nation’s fifth-busiest shopping day of the holiday season.
In 2011, shopping on the day after Christmas was the fourth-largest shopper-traffic and retail sales day in the nation between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve. It trailed Black Friday on Nov. 25; Friday, Dec. 23; and Super Saturday on Dec. 17, according to ShopperTrak, a Chicago-based retail technology company.
ShopperTrak reported consumers spent about $7.1 billion on Dec. 26, 2011, a 25.5 percent increase over the day after Christmas in 2010.
“Dec. 26 last year was an unusually busy shopping day because it fell on a Monday, a day that many people added to the Christmas weekend and used for gift exchanges and more shopping,” ShopperTrak founder Bill Martin said. “This year, Dec. 26 falls on a Wednesday, pulling many people back to work and away from stores.”
As a result of Dec. 26 being in the middle of the week, ShopperTrak predicts today will be the fifth busiest day for shopper traffic and the seventh largest retail sales day of the holiday season.
Will you be shopping today — or perhaps returning gifts that just didn’t work out? If you’re heading to the stores today, what are you looking for?
