The leader of an effort to get a downtown casino in Cedar Rapids is hosting a campaign fundraiser for Gov. Terry Branstad Tuesday night.

Businessman Steve Gray, who is leading Cedar Rapids Development LLC, the group that has announced plans to seek a gambling license for an $80 million casino development, is hosting the fundraiser at his Indian Hills Road home.

The fact that he’s raising money doesn’t mean he and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds are running for a sixth term in 2014, Branstad said.

“We’re keeping our options open,” Branstad said, but noted the money raised will go to his campaign committee.

Do you think Branstad will seek re-election in 2014?

Will Governor Branstad seek re-election in 2014?
  1. Hopefully NOT!!!

  2. In the middle of the worst economic downturn in 80 years, Branstad responds by shutting down WorkForce Development offices with the excuse that people can go to their local libraries and use the computers there.
Yesterday, Branstad said that gee whiz, the state government is running a surplus. Restore lost services? Not a chance. It’s tax cut time.
Now he’s got a casino developer rasing money for his sixth, or is it seventh , run for office. The future of Iowa? Is in gambling joints?
Why don’t we just cut to the chase and have this wretched old man annointed governor for life.

    • Roberta…have you noticed the work slowdown that the state employees are doing on purpose to make it miserable…I’m glad he is shutting it down…they all ought to get fired…they don’t realize that my payroll deductions are what pay THIER salary….if you call they say they will get back to you…NOT…they are trying to make it look like THIER over worked…I wish they would just do their job…

      • Mr Moser,
I have not a clue what you are talking about. The shutdowns were done over a year ago. Those WorkForce Development offices—like Cedar Rapids and Iowa City—that are still open are working short-staffed. You don’t like the level of service you are getting? And your solution is to fire them all so there’s no one in those offices to help you?
It’s too bad that you are not getting the help you need, but you are blaming the wrong people

      • “…work slowdowns that the state employees are doing…” Specifically what state employees (what departments) are you talking about and how have you noticed the slowdown ? (Provide us some more information.)
If they are indeed doing “work slowdowns” what goal would they be trying to accomplish by such a tactic ?

  3. For the sake of the state, I hope not, but the democrats have to run someone that is better then they did last time, no matter who the republicans run, Culver vetoing the labor bill the first year in office made him no better then Brainstrad. I also wonder when Brainstrad gets out of office, since he is double dipping by getting a pension and salary, does the salary give him a reason to recieve another pension on top of the one he is already drawing, where as he can double dip two pensions from the state?

  4. Yes. He will run because he will need a second term to get to his promised 200,000 new jobs number. And that is going to be more difficult because Romney has promised 139,000 new jobs in Iowa. If Romney gets to count his 139,000 first, the Governor has an even steeper hill to climb.

  5. Where’s my 25% salary increase he promised.

  6. When governor Branstad left office at the end of 4 consecutive terms, he left with the state having a nearly billion dollar surplus ($980 million, if I remember correctly) in spite of the “farm crisis” years while he was in office. That’s pretty impressive in my book. I also think he was correct in shutting down the workforce offices when tax dollars are also supporting our librairies. That’s just using good sense & part of the reason the state HAS a surplus. If governor Branstad should decide to run again, he will certainly get MY vote. I think the state of Iowa has been fortunate to have him as our governor & I’d like to see him serve ANOTHER 4 consecutive terms!

    • Mr Cubbage,
      You must not be unemployed.
People who work in libraries are not trained to to deal with people who are looking for work and trying to navigate what can be a very confusing system. Librarians cannot answer questions about unemployment compensation, wages owed but not paid, Workmen’s Comp, how to write a resume or interview for a job or have a clue about how to apply for a job with our local major employers. They also cannot administer typing tests or Work Keys or any number of other assessments designed to determine qualifications or answer questions about resources available for continuing education
Librarians are not social workers. And what Branstad did was stupid and unfair and short-sighted. There are things more important than piling up a billion dollar surplus. How about starting with serving the needs of the people who live in this state

      • No Roberta, I’m not unemployed. I’m SELF-employed & have been since Jan. 1, 1972. That includes having done tree trimming & removal for 38 years & having done it on crutches & one leg since 1980 after losing a leg in a motorcycle accident in 1979 & never having worn a prothesis. Anyone who can’t go to a librairy & figure out the things you talk about isn’t likely capable of holding down a job above being a Wal-Mart Greeter anyway. I applaud governor Branstad’s common sense approach. We need a lot more gov’t employees just like him.

        • Mr Cubbage,
          Thank you for sharing.
One problem, however, with your reply. Perhaps you are correct in saying that “Anyone who can’t go to a librairy & figure out the things you talk about isn’t likely capable of holding down a job above being a Wal-Mart Greeter anyway”, but even Wal-Mart greeters have to apply for those jobs on line.
