Should school districts use federal holidays as snow makeup days?

An NAACP youth group plans to protest a decision by the Des Moines school district to hold classes on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to make up a snow day.
The youth council for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People intended to submit a letter of protest to the Des Moines school board Tuesday night, the Des Moines Register reported.
The district is using Jan. 21 as a makeup day for one of two school days that were canceled because of a late December storm. The second snow day will be made up on Presidents Day in February.
Cedar Rapids Community School District students will also attend classes on Jan. 21 to make up for the weather-related school cancellation Dec. 20. Jan. 21 was established as a make-up date on the 2012-13 calendar, district officials said.

Use whatever days are needed. Lifes not fair, it’s more important to get an education than a day off of school. If this is the biggest thing they have to whine about, then they really don’t have many problems in their life.
Don’t kids already go to school on Columbus Day? Why should these federal holidays be any different when it comes to school attendance?
Not sure what the “NAACP youth group” thinks that it is protesting. There are no national holidays in the USA; only federal holidays for employees of the federal government. No one appears to be lobbying to keep federal offices in Des Moines open on MLK day in connection with this “make-up day”, so what’s the beef?
They should have used December 25 or January 1 for the makeup days.
I really dont see the big deal like others have said school is in session on Columbus Day and other holidays..I never had MLK Day off of school..Also, as a teenager wouldnt you want to make up the snow day sooner then later into the summer.
