U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley is planning to meet with Democratic leaders in the U.S. Senate, but says he has not decided whether he will run to succeed Sen. Tom Harkin.
However, speculation that the four-term Waterloo Democrat will run for the Senate grows, fueled in part by meetings Wednesday with the Iowa House and Senate Democratic caucuses at the Statehouse.
Do you think Braley should run for Harkin’s Senate seat?
I cannot thing of anyone better than Bruce Braley to serve as our next Senator and I will be greatly disappointed if he does not run.
It seems to me that Tom Vilsack may be looking for a job in the near future.
And the Culver name has served Iowa in Washington DC as well.
Odd that I can’t think of one good name on the Republican side of this equation.
I can think of a great conservative Republican his name is Bill Salier a Nora Springs farmer and a veteran Marine.
If I am not mistaken, Salier has never won an election in his life. He also advocates some very extreme positions that will not be accepted by most Iowans. I hope he gets the Republcan nomination.
I found this in The Iowa Republican:
“WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Bill Salier, a staunch pro-life, small-government conservative and co-founder of the group Everyday America, Sunday announced his support for Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Vander Plaats”
This guy sounds like he’s be an even better candidate for Harkin’s Senate seat than even Steve King.
Please please please please, God, let him run.
I have contacted Rep. Braley three times, and he has never responded. If this is how he conducts business I don’t think he deserves the right to represent Iowans.
Maybe you shouldn’t have used the salutation “Dear Socialist Running Dog” in your correspondences to him…
Bras,
You don’t live in his district. You live in Dave Loebsack’s district.
If you were contacting him about an issue (for or against), you get a thank you form letter. Maybe. If you were contacting about a particular problem you thought he could solve for, you’d be low priority.
Next time you want to contact a member of Congress, contact the guy who actually represents you. Then you can complain
Braley will no doubt run, but he can’t hide from his tax & spend record.
Kim Reynolds would make a great candidate with her experience and record. Our Lt. governor has helped make Iowa one of the top 5 best run states in the US.
I know that Kim Reynolds is our Lt. Governor but I suspect the vast majority of Iowans do not. She may have the lowest name recognition of any Lt. Gov in the country. It’s hard to get public exposure from under Branstad’s shadow.
Sue,
“Tax and spend” is an outdated, cliched, meaningless bumper sticker slogan. Anyone still using that kind of languague is a relic from the ’80s.
So what is your objection to Bill Braley. Your real objection.
With regard to Iowa’s ranking in Wall Street 24/7′s annual assessment of all the states, Iowa ranked 3rd in 2010 (back when Culver was governor and Democrats Vilsack and Culver had been running the state for 12 years). Iowa slipped to #5 in 2011 and remained at #5 in 2012.
While we’re at it, the State of Iowa is sitting on a surplus of close to $700 million and growing. Should we then dismiss Branstad as a “tax and hoard” kind of guy?
Correction,
Sue, what about Bruce—not “Bill”—Braley don’t you like
Braley can do the most good for the state by retaining his House seat for a few more years. I’d like to see Vilsack reprise his governorship, although I doubt that it fits into his career plans. Culver was an adequate but not remarkable Governor who was probably too laid-back for his own (political) good. I think that it would be a sure ticket for Branstad’s re-election if the Dems front another “one-town wonder” as they had been wont to do in the pre-Vilsack era. To unseat Branstad will require someone with at least statewide political stature, a centrist record of accomplishments, and able to articulate a clear vision of progressive lawmaking to deal with the state’s many problems..
