State lawmakers say there needs to be a lot more discussion before they stand behind University of Northern Iowa President Ben Allen’s recommendation to shut down Malcolm Price Laboratory School.
Allen met Wednesday with faculty, staff and families and announced his recommendation, which he says would save the university as much as $2 million, depending on the number of layoffs.
Iowa House Speaker Kraig Paulsen, R-Hiawatha, and House Speaker Pro Tem Jeff Kaufmann, R-Wilton, praised Allen’s leadership on the tough decisions Thursday.
But emotional parents, students and staff have implored Allen to reconsider the decision.
What do you think?
The Republicans war on education is finally paying dividends!
Snark aside, this is a long term solution to a short term problem. I understand the museum and athletics decisions, but there has to be a better way to save some money for a few years while the economy recovers and sanity is restored.
At best, this is a decision made based on pessimism. Pessimism on the future of the economy, of state aid for education and of the direction of our society. Not a good sign, and it brings up questions about what type of leader President Allen is.
