Cedar Rapids will be an overnight stop on the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) this year for the first time since 1990, while Anamosa will be hosting bike riders overnight for the first time in 10 years. What do you think about Cedar Rapids hosting the event? What do you think about Anamosa hosting the event? Good idea? Bad idea? Will you take part?
I think it is great for both cities. What more is there to say?
Perhaps the experience will encourage us to become a ‘bike friendly city’!
Please remember to share the road and give bicyclists plenty of room. Don’t gripe: enjoy the spectacle!
I wish The bicyclist would also heed your advice JK…riding 6 abreast on two lane roads at the crest of a hill no way for a car to pass…hogging up not only one lane but part of the other….much to RAGBRAIs dismay….not all of Iowa is excited about their rude behavior…but I will say their female bare naked beer slides are not hard on the eyes…
Keep in mind that the estimate for riders is at 10k and up. Move that many people down the road, and you basically have no choice but to ride 6 abreast.
RAGBRAI is working on it though. Years ago, riders actually took up both lanes. Through education and encouragement from the organizers, they’ve been able to keep the riders to 1 lane.
It’s wonderful that both cities will reap financial rewards. I sure wish that we had started our flood walls and could have protection.Quaker Oats is already done and we should be done also.
Just an observation – - There are two touring events in Iowa every summer: RAGBRAI and TractorCade. This year each event will have a stop in Clinton. One may say, “Cheers for Clinton”. However, it makes me wonder if there is (or should be) any coordination between the two events.
Too bad the riders will be herded downtown. There is a lot more to CR than our sacred downtown.
This is great news for the entire area. Most of the thousands of RAGBRAI riders and support drivers are from the upper Midwest, fairly affluent, energetic, and fun loving. If Cedar Rapids does a good job showcasing our attractions we can count on many of them returning with their families as future tourists. I’ve ridden on RAGBRAI for many years and can tell you there’s not a better group of folks. The few rowdy parities are usually local people, not the riders.
Mays Island for all the campers?
Yeah, that’s what I thought, I’m not sure how they think they’re all going to fit.
Perhaps they’re counting on some staying in the yards of people who volunteer to house bikers.
I’m gonna run a shuttle service for kids in Iowa City/Coralville who want to come up and set up lemonade stands in Cedar Rapids.
