Street Photography in New York

I have been a big fan of Chicago Tribune photographer Scott Strazzante’s Shooting From the Hip street photography photo blog for some time. Scott spends lots of time walking the streets of Chicago photographing the people he encounters and since I am in New York for Iowa’s games in the NIT I thought I would [...]

Match day

University of Iowa medical students Fransetta Sterling of North Liberty (center) and Natalya Hutchinson of Iowa City (right) react after learning their residency assignments on Match Day in the atrium of the Medical Education and Biomedical Research Facility (MERF) on Friday, March 15, 2013, in Iowa City. Sterling took several years off after undergraduate studies at University of Illinois in Chicago to raise and homeschool her daughter Esperanza Sterling, 19 (left), and will be at Howard University for her residency in psychiatry. Hutchinson is headed to University of California at Irvine for her pathology residency. Medical students nation-wide, including 129 University of Iowa medical students, received their residency assignments Friday. (Liz Martin/The Gazette-KCRG)

Earlier today I covered Match Day at the University of Iowa med school. Out of 137 med students, 129 participated in the National Residency Matching Program, which determines where students will pursue their residency training. Envelopes were handed out one-by-one, but it was a pretty quick process. I knew I could drive myself crazy [...]

Demolition day

The 1985 building of the Gazette is demolished on Thursday, March 7, 2013, in downtown Cedar Rapids. The Gazette building has been purchased by developer Steve Emerson, and while the 1923 building, which faces 5th Street SE, will be leased by the Gazette, the 1985 building is being demolished to make way for parking for tenants of Emerson's building at 600 Third Ave SE. (Liz Martin/The Gazette-KCRG)

It’s been months since we worked in the 1985 building of the Gazette. Since the Gazette buildings were sold to developer Steve Emerson (here’s the story on the sale and plans for the site), our photo studio has been relocated to the basement of the KCRG building and for a couple years now we’ve had [...]

Judy

Judy Askew is a recovering gambling addict, and is on probation for first-degree theft after using her aunt's money to gamble. "It wasn't fun, it was work," Askew says of gambling at the casino slots. "You're throwing money away, and that's not fun." It has now been two years since she was in a casino, she has graduated from SASC's (Substance Abuse Services Center) Problem Gambling Treatment Program, has put herself on a list of those banned from the Iowa lottery for life and from area casinos, and is part of a gamblers support group that meets at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Photographed at her apartment in Mount Vernon on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013. (Liz Martin/The Gazette-KCRG)

Several weeks ago, Judy invited reporter Rick Smith and I to her apartment in Mount Vernon to share her story of gambling addiction, felony theft conviction and continuing recovery. Rick’s story on problem gambling ran today, as we near the March 5 vote on a casino in Linn County. Rick and I have done [...]
