Gray's Area by Rob Gray

Rob Gray
I was born and raised in Ames and somehow obtained a college degree from both Iowa State and Iowa. And in a former professional life, I served as a beat writer for both Northern Iowa and Drake football — so I feel I have all my in-state Division I bases covered. I absolutely welcome and appreciate feedback, from story ideas to questions and constructive criticism. You can also find me on Twitter @RobWGray. Sometimes I’m there. Sometimes I’m enjoying time with my young kids, on a long hike, or eating some pizza. OK, a lot of pizza. Gotta change that back to a little. Thanks for checking out the blog and, again, feel free to contact me via Twitter or e-mail at robgray18@yahoo.com

Gilbert’s Ben Durbin trades brown and gold for cardinal and gold

By Rob Gray Gazette correspondent Tackle? End? Either designation suits former Gilbert High School star and freshly-minted Iowa State defensive lineman Ben Durbin just fine. “I can play both at a high level,” said Durbin, a 6-3, 256-pound senior who was slated to be one of Wyoming’s starting defensive ends this season before journeying back [...]

Tipton’s Miller, ISU’s Elahi, Iowa’s Doris gain gold at Drake Relays (w/video)

By Rob Gray Gazette correspondent  DES MOINES — Ashley Miller beamed, one hand on hip, one long-sought flag clutched in the other. As the former Tipton star-turned-Nebraska standout embarked on her first Drake Relays victory lap as a collegian on Saturday, she stopped to sign a pair of autographs. Another first, which drew another smile. [...]

Klein stretches his legs for a pick-6

Cyclones' defense forces three picks in a span of five plays

AMES — Iowa State linebacker A.J. Klein rose up, huffed, puffed then sniffed the end zone. Just a few more steps … “Do you think he ran out of gas?” Cyclone coach Paul Rhoads said after Saturday’s spring game. “He tugged his way into the end zone. That was good to see.” It’s a well-worn [...]

QB battle round 2 alive, well at ISU

Barnett, Jantz get their reps Saturday in Cyclones’ spring tilt

AMES — Fifteen practices down. One big decision coming up. Iowa State’s quarterback situation, as expected, remained unsettled after Saturday’s spring game/scrimmage before an estimated crowd of 5,000 at Jack Trice Stadium. The top contenders, Steele Jantz and Jared Barnett, combined for three interceptions (Barnett threw two), but also helped the offense piece together [...]

New ISU OC Courtney Messingham on spring game eve (video)

By Rob Gray Gazette correspondent AMES — Courtney Messingham’s playbook is simpler, but no less demanding for Iowa State’s football players. Messingham, who replaced former Cyclone offensive coordinator Tom Herman (now of Ohio State) after last season’s Pinstripe Bowl, has preached quality over quantity in terms of schemes. Players have taken to his approach — [...]

ISU football player David Irving, a defensive end

Cyclones DE Irving hopes to reach untapped potential

Former basketball star could add valuable depth to ISU's D-line

AMES — David Irving’s faced an uphill climb on the football field. The raw, but gifted Iowa State defensive end’s well-suited for the arduous trek. Irving’s a mountain of a man — 6-7, 262 pounds — and virtually untapped in terms of potential. “Really, the sky’s the limit with him,” Cyclones defensive ends coach Curtis [...]

Rhoads expecting a whirlwind of emotions in Cyclones’ Saturday scrimmage

Jantz, Barnett continue to battle for starting QB job

AMES — Iowa State football coach Paul Rhoads is prepared to grimace and smile. Sometimes, simultaneously. Rhoads hopes to see sound fundamentals and keen mental awareness showcased by his mostly young Cyclones in Saturday’s 2 p.m. spring game. But depending on which side of the ball’s performing best, that will translate to turnovers and/or [...]

ISU’s James White stood out in weekend scrimmage

Junior started nine games last season

AMES — Saturday’s Iowa State football scrimmage was closed to the media. But for James White, it blew wide open. The explosive and now-featured junior running back sprinted and darted for what Cyclone coach Paul Rhoads estimated to be an 80- to 90-yard touchdown. No one’s keeping score, but White continues to impress with a [...]

ISU D-backs coach: “Get big” on drops

Cyclones had just 11 INTs last year

AMES — If Iowa State football fans see a more muscular secondary this fall, it will indicate two things. One, strength and conditioning director Yancy McKnight’s offseason training regimen continues to reap dividends. Two, Cyclone defensive backs are dropping too many potential interceptions in practice. “We tell them to get big on the drops,” said [...]
