IOWA CITY - I'm hearing and seeing some confusion as to what the 21-only bar ordinance in Iowa City would actually do.
Some people are saying it would apply to all establishments with a liquor license.
Wrong.
It would apply only to those whose primary purpose is to sell alcohol – namely, those that make more than 50 percent of their revenue from alcohol sales. That is, bars.
Here's a
link to the current ordinance (go to title 5, chapter 4, section 8). The only thing that would change with the new law, which is expected to be approved April 6, is the minimum age to be in one of the affected establishments (i.e., bars) would increase to 21 from the current 19.
