Ex-Hawks trying to land in the NFL
Aug. 27, 2009 1:16 pm
Iowa has several former players who are NFL stars (Aaron Kampman, Bob Sanders), solid veterans (Casey Wiegmann, Eric Steinbach) and rookie free agents trying to land on a team (Mitch King, Rob Bruggeman). Here's an update on all former Hawkeyes and how they're doing in the NFL as teams approach first cuts on Tuesday.
Miami Dolphins: Matt Roth, OLB. Roth is slow to return after a groin injury, and is aggravating the Dolphins' brass in the process. A full-time starter last season, Roth is listed as a third-team linebacker.
New York Jets: Shonn Greene, RB. Greene looks to be the Jets' No. 3 running back, but will see significant time this season. He's currently sidelined with sore ribs following the Jets' Monday night game at Baltimore. Matt Kroul, NT. Kroul is listed as fourth team on the Jets' depth chart, a tough spot for a rookie free agent. Kroul's smallish size makes him a tough fit in a 3-4 alignment but might make an NFL practice squad this year.
Baltimore Ravens: Bryan Mattison, G. Mattison, a former DE at Iowa, moved to offensive line this year and is listed as the Ravens' second-team left guard. He did play defensive end in the fourth quarter against the New York Jets, however. Marshal Yanda, G. Yanda is now working at first-team right guard after shredding his knee last year in a season-ending injury.
Cleveland Browns: Eric Steinbach, G. Steinbach remains the Browns' first-team left guard. He's also worked some at left tackle for a team struggling on offense.
Cincinnati Bengals: Abdul Hodge, LB. After bouncing around the league for four years, Hodge is listed as the Bengals' second-team middle linebacker.
Indianapolis Colts: Dallas Clark, TE. Clark has shaken off the effects of a concussion and is back to starting for the Colts. Bob Sanders, SS. Sanders is recovering from off-season knee surgery and is listed on the Colts' physically unable to play list. The team is unsure if Sanders, the 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, will play in the team's opener on Sept. 13. Marcus Paschal, FS. Paschal is trying to stick with the Colts as a back-up but is listed as fourth team entering the team's third preseason game. He recently was added to the Colts' roster.
Tennessee Titans: Mitch King, DT. King is listed as the Titans' fourth-team DT. He struggled in the Titans' preseason opener but has played fairly well in the last two preseason games.
Jacksonville Jaguars: Sean Considine, S. Considine returns to face his old team, Philadelphia, tonight as the sideshow. Considine remains a backup safety and a key special teams contributor.
Oakland Raiders: Robert Gallery, G. Gallery has developed into one of the NFL's best guards, but has yet to shed the "bust" label because he's not a Pro Bowl left tackle. Brandon Myers, TE. Myers is still listed as the Raiders' No. 3 tight end, but he's turning heads with his pass-catching skills.
Denver Broncos: Casey Wiegmann, C. Wiegmann, who is in his 14th season, remains the NFL's latest iron man. Wiegmann has started the last 127 games in his career and played in 8,046 consecutive snaps. Seth Olsen, OL. Olsen is listed as a second-team left guard in his rookie season. C.J. Jones, WR. Jones, most famous for his opening kickoff return against USC in the 2003 Orange Bowl, is listed as a third-team receiver. He's one of many ex-Patriots now living in Denver under new coach Josh McDaniels.
Kansas City Chiefs: Mike Goff, RG. Goff left San Diego in the offseason and is listed as the starter at right guard. Since 2000, Goff has started all but three games, with more 100 consecutive.
San Diego Chargers: Nate Kaeding, K. Kaeding, one of the NFL's top kickers, had a 56-yard field goal against Arizona last weekend.
Dallas Cowboys: Scott Chandler, TE. Chandler is not listed among the top four TEs in Cowboys' camp, but helped facilitate a nice catch against Tennessee. Derreck Robinson, DE. Robinson is listed as a third-team DE.
Washington Redskins: Ladell Betts, RB. Betts officially still is listed as the Redskins' No. 2 back, but he will play on third downs and might surpass Clinton Portis this year. Betts shifted his off-season routine to stay in better shape. But he injured his back against Pittsburgh last week.
Detroit Lions: Jared DeVries, DE. DeVries ruptured his right Achilles' tendon in practice and is out for the season.
Green Bay Packers: Aaron Kampman, LB. Kampman is switching to LOLB as the Packers move from a 4-3 alignment to a 3-4. It's not a comfortable switch for Kampman, who has 37 sacks the last three seasons.
Minnesota Vikings: Albert Young, RB. Young has moved into third on the Vikings' depth chart, and leads the Vikings in preseason rushing yards with 75. Chad Greenway, LB. Greenway is a lock as the Vikings' strong-side LB.
Carolina Panthers: Jason Baker, P. Baker, a top NFL punter, also showcased his passing skills during a preseason game. Charles Godfrey, S. Godfrey, a starting free safety, suffered a broken bone in his right hand requiring surgery, but he likely will return by the Panthers' opener.
Atlanta Falcons: Jonathan Babineaux, DT. Babineaux has established himself as a solid starter at DT.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Rob Bruggeman, C. Bruggeman, a rookie free agent, is listed as the Bucs' third-team center.
Arizona Cardinals: Kenny Iwebema, DE. Iwebema is listed as second team, and seems to be healthy following a cancer scare.
St. Louis Rams: Bradley Fletcher, CB. Fletcher, the team's third-round pick, is playing special teams and is a third-team cornerback. But he's having fun.
Seattle Seahawks: Colin Cole, DT. Cole is listed as the Seahawks' starting right defensive tackle and is praised as a
