And it’s also fun to work with kids.”

May, Iowa’s co-captain this past year, finished his senior season playing in all 38 games – while starting in seven – averaging 5.2 points per game, 39 percent from 3-point range and a career-high 45 percent from the field.

While May is hoping to continue to play basketball, he said he is working out with the team in Iowa City this summer and has a camp in Las Vegas in July for scouts from overseas to take a look at him.

“I enjoy it a lot,” said former Iowa basketball stand-out Luke Recker. “I lived in Iowa City with Luehrsmann for a year and we kept in touch.

“He’s done a great job to building a great program and I’m glad to help him out in these camps…Going these camps is part of basketball. We enjoy teaching these kids and watch them work hard and get better.”

Recker, playing one year with Xavier head coach Ryan Luehrsmann at Iowa, played professional basketball overseas in Europe for seven years after he finished his collegiate career. He now resides in Coralville and works at Stryker, a medical device company.

“It’s a great opportunity to teach the knowledge they had gain throughout the years to the kids,” Luehrsmann said.

“Luke [Recker] and I are good friends and we stayed in contact with each other throughout the years. Eric [May], I knew for a while now, and was kind enough to do camp this year.”

The Xavier basketball players who attended the camp didn’t know much about who Recker was, but knew highly of May.

“I know Eric May was really good for Iowa,” said senior guard Andrew Bisenius. “And it’s really cool to have good players to come back to teach us things to get better at.”

Junior forward Calvin Winker said it was nice of May and Recker to come back to the camp to teach them the skills they had to offer.

“Eric is a great guy. I know he is a great shooter and that he can jump high. He was teaching me how to back squat properly so I can gain vertical when I jump.”

“He’s such a hard worker,” said sophomore guard Mitch Burger of May. “I’m a giant Iowa fan. The team this year making it to the NIT was great and it’s nice of him to come back to show us some stuff.”

Luehrsmann said this camp allows the kids to learn not just skills but hard work as well.

“Eric and Luke are firm believers of individual work to become better players. I know they both do an hour work of shooting, ball handling, passing and other skills they need to work on everyday.

“For my players to learn from these guys, it can give them a blueprint for the summer on what they need to work on for the upcoming season,” he said.

Quad Cities 9; Kernels 8

Kernels Schedule

ewen

Sports Cover Story

UNI camp provides more than opportunity in sports

UNI Panthers

camps

Northern Iowa Panthers

Panthers

sports camps

top video sports

video

CEDAR FALLS — Each year when the UNI Adapted Sports Camp is held on the Cedar Falls campus, it provides something no other summer camp in Iowa can. Camp co-director Jack Eherenman said the camp is mostly used as an introduction to the sports in wheelchairs and to other people with similar disabilities.

“Some don’t even know it’s out there,” Eherenman said of the opportunities to participate in many different sports. “Some have never seen anybody else with a disability in their community. They don’t even know there are other kids like them out there. Then they learn there are sports they can do. They learn how to do the sports and we provide them with equipment.”

The camp offers eight different sports for the campers and runs from Wednesday through Saturday with a dozen participants throughout the four days. It also provides equipment for campers to use such as wheelchairs adapted to play basketball as well as race on a running track.

Karlee Hughes, 7, of Dakota Dune, South Dakota. (Liz Martin/The Gazette-KCRG)

It was Wednesday morning that Karlee Hughes, a 7-year-old from Dakota Dunes, S.D., first learned how to complete her first mile on the track under her own power. Growing up and watching her siblings play sports is a big part of Karlee’s life and something her mom, Missy, said she has wanted to do for herself.

“She’s the only one in our school and community in a wheelchair so we don’t have a lot of this,” Missy said of the Adapted Sports Camp. “No matter what the age here, they’re all connecting. [Wednesday] they played telephone and Minute to Win It. She was just giggling and it just melted my heart. I love that she’s able to be around peers and relate to other people.”

Karlee said she is most looking forward to “learning new things and meeting new people.” She is also enthused with the chance to play wheelchair basketball, a love that fellow camper and coach Jordan Houdeshell of Marion shares. Houdeshell has been attending the camp for the last five years and has really connected each year with new campers.

“I love teaching new kids how to play sports,” Houdeshell said. “The excitement in their eyes makes me excited. The problem with adaptive sports is that nobody knows about it. We need to get the word out so we have more disabled people getting out and playing sports instead of just sitting at home being a couch potato.”

Volunteer Marissa Schissel of Waterloo helps Jordan Houdeshell, a recent Linn-Mar graduate. Sports are something the campers learn, Eherenman said, that will be a catalyst to help them with the challenges they will face in everyday life.

“The only difference between our athletes and a lot of other athletes is that they play it in a chair,” Eherenman said. “They have a lot of the same wants, desires, needs and everything. They just have a different way of playing a sport and their barriers are a lot bigger.”

Mike Boone, director of Adaptive Sports Iowa, is one of the providers of the equipment the campers use. Seeing them use the modified chairs is something that is “life-changing” for those kids.

“If you take that kid and put them in a chair that’s designed specifically for racing, all of a sudden they are going faster,” Boone said. “You take that kid and put them in a sports chair, they can be very aggressive and turn sharp. When you provide them with that piece of equipment, their whole perspective changes because now they can compete at a higher level.”

More information on the camp can be found on Facebook by joining the UNI Adapted Sports Camp group, or by contacting Jack Eherenman at jeconstruction@hotmail.com

Kernels use big 8th to clinch playoff spot

Cedar Rapids Kernels

Diamonds and Ice by Jeff Johnson

Baseball

Byron Buxton

Kernels

Midwest League

The Cedar Rapids Kernels are bound for the postseason. The football team had a score of 928.

Come 2014-15, teams must have a four-year APR of 930 or a two-year average of 940 to compete in the postseason. Those standards will be raised from the current qualifying scores of 900 and 930, respectively, in place for the 2012-13 academic year.

The APR is a score used by the NCAA to track academic progress, athlete retention and graduation. Failure to meet the minimum score can result in practice restrictions, scholarship reductions and postseason bans.

No other ISU team scored below a 949, which was the mark the men’s basketball team posted. The women’s basketball team and the volleyball team each had a 985. The tennis team posted the highest ISU score, a 1,000, which is the considered a perfect APR score.

The NCAA calculates the APR rate for each program as a rolling, four-year figure. The latest figures run through the 2011-12 academic year.

Quad Cities 8; Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

NEW YORK – Alex Rodriguez might finally be facing the penalty for his long-suspected steroid use.

According to ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” report Tuesday, A-Rod is among roughly 20 baseball players targeted for suspension by Major League Baseball for their involvement in the Biogenesis scandal.

MLB’s big break came when they gained the cooperation of Tony Bosch, founder of the now-shuttered South Florida clinic linked to having provided performance-enhancing drugs to pro athletes. ESPN reported that Bosch is expected to begin “naming names” to MLB officials within a week and that announced suspensions could follow within two weeks.

Plus, A-Rod isn’t the only Yankees’ player involved in MLB’s investigation.

Francisco Cervelli’s name turned up in Biogenesis records obtained when the Miami New Times revealed the scandal in January, but the Yankees’ catcher denied having ever obtained any drug from the so-called anti-aging clinic.

In April, ESPN reported that Sonia Cruz, the spokeswoman for Robinson Cano’s charitable foundation, was listed as a client in Biogenesis documents. That prompted MLB investigators to explore the matter.

“It doesn’t have anything to do with me,” Cano said at the time. “I know what I’m doing and I know myself. So it does not bother me.”

Rodriguez previously has denied any connection with Biogenesis through his public relations arm, though he was forced to admit to past steroid use in 2009, when Sports Illustrated reported that he failed a drug test during his time with the Texas Rangers.

Yankees officials repeatedly have stated that these matters are in the hands of MLB investigators and require no further elaboration.

But during a Monday visit to Yankee Stadium, managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner admitted that Rodriguez’s past indiscretions have drawn the club’s ire.

“There have no doubt been times that we’ve been disappointed in him and we’ve conveyed that to him and he understands that,” Steinbrenner said. “But look, everybody’s human. Everybody makes mistakes.”

Steinbrenner added Monday that “There’s innocent until guilty, right?” and that he hadn’t heard anything about Rodriguez in regard to MLB’s current investigation.

Still, “from Day One they were expecting the worse,” according to a person familiar with ownership. And depending upon contract language, the Yankees could further examine ways to extricate themselves from a 10-year, $275 million contract that runs through 2017.

“It’s a big contract,” Steinbrenner said. “But we all hope he’s going to act like a Yankee and do the best he can to live up to it. Like A-Rod, Cervelli (fractured hand) also is on the DL and rehabbing at the club’s Tampa, Fla. complex.

A 50-game ban for a first offense would cost Rodriguez roughly $8.5 million in lost salary. But according to ESPN’s sources, MLB could be seeking to hit A-Rod, Milwaukee Brewers slugger Ryan Braun and other players with 100-game suspensions.

The reasoning is that the PEDs supplied to them by Biogenesis account for one offense and that previous denials of such use to MLB officials constitute another.

Among the players connected to Biogenesis who could be suspended are ex-Yankees Melky Cabrera, Bartolo Colon and Jesus Montero.

Bosch’s reported cooperation to provide sworn testimony of having supplied PEDs to players obviously has given MLB officials the hope of gaining information required to make the suspensions stick.

According to ESPN sources, in exchange for Bosch’s testimony, MLB would drop its lawsuit filed against Bosch, indemnify him from liability that might arise from his participation and provide for his personal security.

The delay in Bosch’s agreement, according to ESPN’s report, was his request for “the strongest assurances he could get” to secure MLB’s help to mitigate the possibility of prosecution.

video board photos

Sports Cover Story

Track: Iowa’s Austin fully recovered for NCAAs

Iowa Hawkeyes

Track and Field

justin austin

NCAA

Track

IOWA CITY — Justin Austin has a message for the rest of the field before the NCAA Track and Field Championships begin Wednesday. (Liz Martin/The Gazette-KCRG)

IOWA CITY — Justin Austin has a message for the rest of the field before the NCAA Track and Field Championships begin Wednesday.

He hopes it got through to anyone who saw the results of the Big Ten championship meet last month.

“I’m back,” the senior Iowa sprinter said after a workout last week. “People know I’ve been down and out for a little while. There were a lot of distractions because of that. Now people know I’m focused, and I’m back on my game.”

Austin dominated the conference championships in Columbus, Ohio. He won titles in the 100 and 200 and helped Iowa’s 400-meter relay win the championship. He was the Athlete of the Big Ten Championships and the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year, the second time in three seasons the Milwaukee native won both awards.

But it’s that other year — last year — that bothers Austin. A recurring hamstring injury hampered him all season, preventing him from winning another conference title. Austin missed workouts and weight room sessions all year.

“We’ve talked a lot about how many workouts he missed when he was supposed to be training,” Iowa sprint coach Joey Woody said. “That just kills everything. Staying healthy is about keeping your training going, so you can keep building and not stressing the system.”

Austin had to stop and think about the last time he missed a workout this year. He couldn’t remember one. Woody said that has allowed for “constant progression” in his star’s senior campaign.

“I’m definitely feeling confident,” Austin said. “You can see by my times; they’re very consistent this year. This is the best year I’ve had so far.”

Austin holds Iowa outdoor records in the 100 and 200. He has run on three of the five fastest 400 relay teams in school history, and the second-fastest 800 relay. The one thing he hasn’t done, Woody said, is live up to those expectations at the NCAA outdoor meet.

He hasn’t been fully healthy for the meet the last two seasons, and his best finish is 13th place in the 200 last year. His last chance is this week in Eugene, Ore., where Austin will race in the 100 and 200 and the 400 relay. Woody said the 200 is Austin’s “baby” — his combination of top speed and ability to maintain it making him an ideal fit for the distance.

“I think he’s got as great a chance as anybody to win that 200,” Woody said. “Once you’re in the finals, anything can happen. … We’d love to send him off with a championship.”

Austin speaks emphatically about his desire to go out on top. At the end of a season in which he showed up to every practice and workout, that will be decided in about 20 seconds.

“I want to end my college career as a national champion,” Austin said. “It’s very important. I wouldn’t say my career is incomplete, but I definitely, definitely really want a national championship. I got my conference honors, they’re good, but at the end of the day I want to take one home.”
