Coralville City Engineer Dan Holderness has been named a Brownfields Leadership Award recipient for local brownfield revitalization from the National Association of Local Government Environmental Professionals.

Holderness, Coralville’s City Engineer for 26 years, has successfully managed 11 EPA Brownfields Assessment Grants valued at over $1.8 million.

1 Million Cups to Feature Two Startups on May 15th

Kauffman Labs for Enterprise Creation, a program of the Kauffman Foundation presents its 1 Million Cups (1MC) program in Iowa City on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the IC CoLab, 316 E Court in Iowa City.

The May 15 presentation will feature live pitches from two local startup teams including Iowa City-baed TelePharm and a new project named Inquiry.

On Wednesday, May 15, the schedule at Iowa City CoLab will include Open Coffee from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 1MC from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

MidAmerican Energy Announces $1.9B Investment in Additional Wind Generation Capacity

Final Creative Corridor Workshop on “Building Culture” May 15

Regional economic development partners in Iowa’s Creative Corridor are hosting the last installment of a four part series on the importance of culture in the workplace. All levels of leadership, including hiring managers, human resource departments and business executives are encouraged to attend and information will be relevant to companies of all sizes and in all industries.

The workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, May 15, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at hotelVetro in downtown Iowa City. Managers and leadership from Geonetric, TrueNorth, Raining Rose, MediRevv, South Slope, and MSI Mold Builders will participate in panel discussions and lead breakout sessions on their culture transformation.

Past culture events have addressed issues including hiring and firing, mission and vision statements, and engaging customers and coworkers. The May 15 event will touch on all of these issues, but will also be an open forum for companies to bring their culture questions. Lunch will be provided and there is no cost to attend, but reservations are required.

IC’s ACT Finds Gap Between High School Curriculum and College Expectations

Findings from the latest ACT National Curriculum Survey® point to a continued gap between what high schools are teaching and what colleges expect their incoming students to know.

ACT’s report, which focuses on the policy implications of the survey results, suggests this gap may indicate a lack of alignment between high school and college curricula that could be contributing to the nation’s college and career readiness problem. The survey results show more than three times as many high school teachers as college instructors believe their students are prepared to succeed in college courses.

Regional HR Activities Receive EXCEL Platinum Award

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has awarded the Iowa Senior Human Resources Association (ISHRA) the EXCEL Platinum Award for 2012. To achieve this award, ISHRA must meet a set of criteria required in the SHRM Affiliate Program for Excellence.

“We are honored to receive this distinction, which recognizes our efforts to help senior and executive level HR professionals provide human resources excellence to the employees and employers we serve. Now, more than ever, the human resources function is critical to business success and we have to perform at a very high level,” states ISHRA President, Russ Curry, SPHR. Mr. Curry is Vice President/Director of Human Resources with West Music in Coralville.

This past year ISHRA partnered with The University of Iowa and Mt. Mercy University student HR chapters to provide mentorship, hosted HR continuing education opportunities including an SPHR conference, and provided employment guidance for the Anamosa State Prison release program.

Alabama First State to Approve Use of ACT Aspire Assessment System

Kauffman Labs for Enterprise Creation, a program of the Kauffman Foundation presents its 1 Million Cups (1MC) program in Iowa City on Wednesday April 17, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the IC CoLab, 316 E Court in Iowa City.

The April 17 presentation will feature a live pitch from local Creative Corridor startup Radiology Protocols. RP provides a cloud-based solution for imaging professionals worldwide, helping them document, organize and tailor their imaging protocols.

Additionally, Iowa City Open Coffee, an ongoing entrepreneurial networking event which launched last fall, will be moving its bi-weekly gatherings from Capanna Coffee Downtown Iowa City to the IC CoLab, starting April 17th, to serve as the lead-up event for 1MC.

ICAD Group Hosting “Modern Marvels” Event May 10

On May 10, 2013, ICAD Group is providing its investors, partners and the community a unique opportunity to see firsthand how engineering is shaping the future of business in Iowa’s Creative Corridor.

Working with the University of Iowa College of Engineering, the University of Iowa Alumni Association and local high schools, ICAD Group is hosting a three hour open house and networking reception focusing on the importance of STEM education (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and the workforce challenges faced by local employers.

ICAD Group Showcasing Innovation in Economic Development 4/9 and 5/10

While working to maintain, grow, and attract interstate commerce in the Iowa City area, the Iowa City Area Development (ICAD) Group is partnering with the Technology Association of Iowa (TAI) and the University of Iowa College of Engineering for two upcoming events.

Tuesday, April 9, ICAD Group will help host a live video/audio stream from the 8th annual Prometheus Awards, live from Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines. The Prometheus Awards, hosted by TAI, have been established as Iowa’s largest and most prestigious distinction that recognizes innovation in Iowa’s high-tech industry. Starting at 6 p.m., ICAD Group will show the ceremony live at the IC CoLab, 316 E Court in Iowa City. Light refreshments will be available and attendees are welcome to bring food and beverage.

Then, on May 10, ICAD Group is hosting a three hour afternoon networking reception in Iowa City to showcase fifteen senior design projects from the University of Iowa College of Engineering. ICAD Group and the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance helped to sponsor three of the senior engineering projects. ICAD Group Adds Two Interns for Spring Semester

Caitlin Hillman and Maggie Brockway will work on assignments and special projects with the IC CoLab, investor relations, workforce development, and entrepreneurial activity during the Spring semester.

Hillman, from Muscatine, Iowa, is studying business and art management, and is focused on working with entrepreneurial and non-profit organizations. Brockway, from Ames, Iowa, is focusing on Environmental Sustainability in Business, and is working toward both an Entrepreneurial Certificate and Certificate of Sustainability.

Layoffs Announced at Iowa Wind Turbine Plant

The Iowa City Area Development (ICAD) Group is supporting a grassroots effort lead by Iowa City startup Needle Analytics to create new state maps that capture and graphically represent the local perception of the state. Submissions will be accepted through June 1 and the top three designs will be printed on posters and sold at Raygun in Iowa City.

Free CoWorking on Feb 21 at IC CoLab

The Iowa City Area Development Group will open the doors of the new IC CoLab on Thursday, February 21, 2013, for a day of free coworking from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The IC CoLab is located at 316 E Court in Iowa City.

The cowork session is casual and attendees can drop in at any time. The IC CoLab will have coffee, wireless internet and electrical outlets provided free of charge.
