Seven teenagers have been charged in connection with a Waterloo mall assault that left one man hospitalized.
According to the Waterloo Police Department, police and fire officials were called to the Crossroads Mall at 7:11 p.m. March 12 for a report of an assault. Officers found the victim, 20-year-old Keith D. Hayes, unconscious on the floor near the carousel in the middle of the mall. Witnesses reported that Hayes was assaulted by several black men who hit him and kicked him in the head.
He was taken to Allen Hospital for treatment.
On Tuesday, the Waterloo Police Department announced they have filed disorderly conduct charges against seven of the alleged participants. Four of the alleged assailants are underage and will not be identified by The Gazette. The other three suspects are Tondrell Gary, Jr., Rayshawn Putman and Shavondes Martin. All three men are 18 and live in Waterloo.Police said Gary was shot later that night during an incident on 428 Cherry St. in Waterloo. After police responded to the shooting, they were called to the hospital for the report of a possible fight in the emergency room. Responding officers learned that prior to their arrival, there had been a fight between friends of Hayes and Gary. Hayes was later charged with disorderly conduct for starting the fight at the hospital.
