The Montreal Canadiens announced Wednesday they have signed former Cedar Rapids RoughRiders defenseman Mac Bennett to a two-year entry level NHL contract.

Bennett recently completed his career at the University of Michigan, where he was team captain as a senior. He had two goals and 12 assists in 31 games this season and was a second-team all-Big Ten Conference pick.

Bennett, 23, recorded 65 points in 136 career games with the Wolverines. The Rhode Island resident was a third-round pick of Montreal in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

He played the 2009-10 season with the RoughRiders and was named to the United States Hockey League All-Rookie Team.
