Evans escape sends Hawkeye into 174-pound semifinal

Mar. 21, 2014 12:42 pm
OKLAHOMA CITY - Two in a row for Mike Evans.
Not only did he record his second straight win over Penn State's Matt Brown, but he also earned his second straight All-America honor.
Evans escaped in the final 10 seconds of overtime tiebreaker to beat Brown, 5-4, in the 174-pound quarterfinals at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Friday at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
Evans, who placed sixth last year, hit a granby roll to get away for the decisive point. He said he was electrified and excited than tired during the final periods.
Brown opened the scoring with a takedown, but Evans answered with a takedown on the edge of the mat late in the first. Brown tied it, 3-3, by the end of the opening period. They each added escapes to force the overtime.
Evans advances to face Oklahoma State's top-seeded and defending national champion Chris Perry.
