Cedar Rapids is in the process of working on its state of equity. This means looking at how equality in various aspects of life among the citizens of Cedar Rapids resonates. On Tuesday, on the front page of the newspaper I saw a complaint about the image on the fire truck.

This is a valid complaint from a citizen of Cedar Rapids, which was done in good faith. I am encouraged that this has created an opportunity for the City of Cedar Rapids to have a conversation around inclusiveness. My understanding is that no public dollars were used in putting that image there because the truck was bought with the image. In addition, the Civil Rights commission is working with the fire department in a collaborative manner, not confrontational, to deal with this issue.

It concerns me when the news and other media sources spend so much time and money on news that is not news. Not having the facts straight and making it seem as though there is a heated controversy where there is none. That time, effort and money could be wisely spent somewhere else on issues such as the Cedar Rapids economy, diversity and inclusiveness.
