Waterloo police are investigating an assault and a shooting that appear to be related.

Waterloo police and fire officials responded to Crossroads Mall, 2600 Crossroads Blvd., at 7:11 p.m. Wednesday for a report of an assault. Responding officers discovered the alleged victim, 20-year-old Keith d. Hayes of Waterloo, unconscious on the floor near the carousel in the middle of the mall. Witnesses told police Hayes was assaulted by several men who hit him and kicked him in the head. Hayes was taken to Allen Hospital for treatment.

Less than two hours later, police were called to 428 Cherry Street for a report of shots fired. Shortly after that call, police learned that the alleged shooting victim was at Allen Hospital. As officers were responding to the hospital, they were informed of a possible fight breaking out in the emergency room. Responding officers learned at the hospital that there had been an argument between friends of Hayes and friends of the shooting victim, identified as Tondrell Gary, 18, of Waterloo.

Police said Gary was shot in the left shoulder blade while sitting in a car on Florence Street. The shots were fired from another passing car. No description of the vehicle or suspects is available.
