While I agree with The Gazette’s decision to drop the weekly Doonesbury strip (the author is on hiatus), I hope editors might reconsider their choices for a possible replacement.

Why not replace Doonesbury with another editorial comic strip? There are plenty of excellent strips to choose from, such as Candorville by Darrin Bell. Editorial comics such as Doonesbury and Mallard Filmore serve an important function in the newspaper, as these strips often raise difficult points in a casual manner, making divisive topics accessible and conversational.

Additionally, the physical placement of Doonesbury next to Mallard Filmore provided a wonderful balance in viewpoint. Please consider keeping two topical strips in the comics page; readers appreciate their varied candor and perspective.
