Woman tells Cedar Rapids police she was sprayed with chemical during robbery attempt

Suspect fled the scene; no serious injuries reported

A Cedar Rapids woman was sprayed with a chemical during an attempted robbery Wednesday night.

According to Cedar Rapids police, officers responded to the Wilson Avenue HyVee at 10:43 p.m. for a report of a robbery. The alleged victim, a 50-year-old woman, told police she was walking out to her car when she was approached by a black man who appeared to be in his twenties. The man demanded her property, but the woman said she had nothing but her groceries.

Police said the suspect then sprayed the woman with some type of chemical. The woman ran back into HyVee and the suspect fled the scene. Police said the woman did not seek medical treatment.

The attempted robbery remains under investigation. The suspect is described as 5 feet 4 inches tall, 130 pounds and dressed in dark clothing.
