The snowy winter and subzero temperatures can't keep state lawmakers and employees from work during this year's legislative session. Several buildings surrounding the Iowa Statehouse are connected by a series of underground tunnels throughout the capitol complex, which include the Statehouse, Hoover Building, Iowa Workforce Development, Grimes Building, the Ola Babcock Miller Building, Lucas Building, and the Wallace Building.

The 4,573 feet of tunnel is widely used to avoid inclement weather as state workers traverse from one building to another. The tunnels also house pipes to heat surrounding infrastructure. The tunnels were not originally meant for pedestrian travel  but for transporting coal to a nearby power plant.
