It’s OK. Admit it. There is something you would love to change about your house. Maybe it’s small, like painting the kitchen. Maybe it’s really large, like re-shingling the roof or adding on. Whatever it is you’re thinking about updating in your home, you’re sure to find ideas and inspiration at the upcoming Cedar Rapids Home Show, Feb. 21 to Feb. 23 at the Hawkeye Downs Expo Center.

“If you’re looking for new ideas for your home, or even looking for a new home, you’ll find it here,” says Bill Jackson, the event organizer, pointing out that in addition to a variety of remodeling companies, several new homebuilders also will be on hand.

Jackson says that after a long, cold winter, Eastern Iowa homeowners “are starting to think about what they want to do and to line up contractors.” The Cedar Rapids Home Show offers a one-stop-shop to meet with a variety of qualified suppliers and contractors, all under one roof.

Jackson says, “If you want to build a new home or remodel your existing home, you’ll find the help you need. If you want to put on a sunroom, redo the kitchen or basement, maybe the siding needs replaced or windows have gotten old, you’ll find what you need at the Home Show.”

The 35th Annual Cedar Rapids Home Show will be held Feb. 21 to Feb. 23 at the Hawkeye Downs Expo Center, 4400 Sixth St. SW, Cedar Rapids. Show hours are Friday, 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. Admission is $5, free for children 12 and under.

LEARN AT LITTLE AT A HOME SHOW SEMINAR

The Cedar Rapids Home Show will present five educational seminars that will be repeated throughout the weekend. Rex Brandstatter will present a seminar entitled “5,001 Things for Boomers and Seniors to Think About” at noon on Saturday and again at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Brandstatter, 64, talks about issues important to seniors on his “Senior Talk” radio show on KCJJ 1630 AM every Wednesday at 12:10 p.m.

Brandstatter says that there is a lot of talk about aging in place as seniors try to stay in their homes longer and avoid moving into a nursing home. But he says it’s important for seniors to think about where they want to age in place. “Maybe it shouldn’t be the big old house where you’ve been all these years. Instead of downsizing, I call it right-sizing, to get something that’s the right size for you.”

As a Realtor with RE/MAX, Brandstatter has helped thousands of people buy and sell a home. He’s also talked to a lot of folks who are hesitant to move.

“The No. 1 reason people don’t move is they say, ‘We have too much stuff. We don’t want to deal with it. Our kids still have stuff here. Well, if that’s the case,” he jokes, “call your kids.”

He encourages homeowners to get organized and decide what’s right for them at each stage of life. “Are you living in just the kitchen, bedroom and dining room? Do you still enjoy your yard or is that a huge project you dread?”

In the same way, if you decide to stay in your home, don’t put up with small annoying things that need to be repaired or replaced.

Brandstatter also encourages people to get other areas of their lives in order, from having a will and advance heath care directive to making sure they understand their insurance policies. “Get your life organized. Get with it. The time is now,” he says.
