A man with a history of legal issues in Johnson County is accused of beating and injuring another inmate at the Johnson County Jail on Monday.
Deandre Irby, 22, punched the inmate in the face and neck at least eight times before picking him up by the neck and slamming him to the floor, according to a criminal complaint.
The victim had been participating in a video visitation at the time of the alleged attack. The complaint says the beating came "without warning or provocation."
The victim suffered scratches to his chest and complained of back and neck pain following the attack, according to the complaint.
Irby was most recently booked into the Johnson County jail on a theft charge. The jail lists his address as "transient."
Last summer Irby was arrested for cocaine possession at a gas station in Tiffin. At that time, authorities said he was also in possession of throwing knives and a sword, which netted him an additional weapons charge.In 2011 Irby was arrested after police stopped him rollerblading through the Iowa City pedestrian mall armed with a sword.
