RoughRiders' Tirone named USHL Goaltender of the Week

Feb. 3, 2014 2:00 pm
A pretty obvious award for Danny Tirone of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.
The Trumbull, Conn., resident was named Monday the United States Hockey League's Reebok Goaltender of the Week. The 19-year-old posted shutouts in both of his games, making 18 saves to beat Des Moines, 1-0, and 32 to blank Green Bay, 5-0.
The University of New Hampshire commit is 7-2-0 in his last nine starts and ranks fifth in the USHL with 16 wins. He is seventh in the league with a 2.53 goals against average and sixth in save percentage at .919.
The RoughRiders host Indiana on Friday night, then travel to Green Bay for a Saturday night game and Chicago for a Sunday afternoon tilt.
Peter Krieger and Brandon Montour of Waterloo were feted with Tirone as forward and defenseman of the week, respectively. The Black Hawks have a 15-game win streak and have not lost in regulation since Nov. 22, 8-6, to Team USA (a string of 21 games).
Fargo, meanwhile, snapped a 17-game losing streak last weekend, knocking off Omaha, 5-2.
