TO THE RESCUE: Kudos to the Jones County Snow Chasers snowmobiling club, whose members helped emergency responders from Anamosa, Martelle, Monticello and Onslow rescue dozens of stranded motorists and passengers from about 25 vehicles after blizzard conditions raced through the area on the evening of Jan. 26. Jones County Sheriff Greg Graver said it was the largest number of people assisted in his 18 years of serving the county.
DELHI DAM A GO: Reconstruction of the Lake Delhi dam — heavily damaged during major flooding in 2008 and 2010 — may be completed by the end of this year and the lake level could be restored by early 2015, local officials said after getting a federal permit for phase one of the restoration project. The permit will allow the dam’s powerhouse to be repaired and upgraded, which also preserves the possibility of generating electricity in the future. If that proves feasible and cost-efficient, perhaps it might help pay back the $8 million-plus investment of state and county funds toward the $15 million-plus project cost.
