TIPTON — There’s a new recreation center coming to town.
The Heartland Sports Complex soon will be opening its doors to the Tipton community in early March, a center that has much to offer the people of Cedar County.
The complex will include a track, multiple courts for basketball and volleyball, batting cages and golf nets. There are fitness and training sessions and an assortment of different clubs and camps.
The complex also will be home to many of the local club teams in need of space to practice and play.
Renee Mente, a Tipton community board member, thinks building this complex will be good for the community.
“There just is not gym space for all the clubs, recreational and school teams we have in this community and county,” Mente said. “There’s things that will be offered here that promote lifelong fitness as well as space for the youth and adults to participate in leagues without having to travel long distance.”
There are only two school gyms in Tipton that host all of sporting events and, with more than 20 club and recreation teams in the community, there is not enough space.
The Heartland Sports Complex is not only exciting for the board members of the Heartland Sports Complex but for the community and beyond as well.
“There is excitement in the air that people won’t have to drive to other cities for leagues anymore,” Mente said. “The interest has even grown beyond Tipton. We have had contact from individuals from Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and even Des Moines.”
Not only will this sports complex be beneficial to the health of the community, but it also could bring in extra revenue.
“It will be a great boost to the local economy when we host weekend tournaments,” Mente said.
