An Iowa City man is accused of attempting to sexually abuse a sleeping woman.

Iowa City police officers responded to a Taylor Drive residence at 5:47 a.m. Saturday for a report of a sexual assault. Police spoke with the victim, who said she was sleeping alone in the basement of the residence when she awoke to 43-year-old Robert L. Bryant putting his hand down the back of her pants.

Police said the woman yelled at Bryant, who got out of the bed and ran across the room. Bryant allegedly became aggressive toward the officers when he was questioned about the attempted assault. Police said Bryant also admitted to smoking crack prior to the attempted assault and told officer he tried to "get up on" the woman.

Bryant was arrested and faces one count of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, an aggravated misdemeanor.
