On the final day of my six month photography internship at The Gazette, I thought I'd post some of the more memorable photos from my time here some of the more interesting shoots.
Sports media days tend to be crazy, with everyone fighting to get shots of the athlete they want. Not being the main shooter at the event, I enjoyed being able to step back here and showing the chaos as everyone clamored for the shot of all the quarterbacks together.
One of the most fun assignments I had was photographing some T-6 military trainer aircraft flying in formation, from one of the planes.
Being the intern here means working holidays, and Christmas was no exception. I'd spent most of the day looking for families out enjoying the fresh snow without much luck, but then the snowfall got heavy for a few minutes while I was at the Jones park sledding hill.
I shot ten games in two days at the state high school volleyball tournament. Avoiding repetition and burnout is tough with that high of a concentration of the same action, so I mixed it up a bit with a tilt shift lens for a unique look at the tournament.
I covered sports more than anything else this fall, and one of the most memorable moments happened at the Coe vs Cornell rivalry men's basketball game. One of the craziest finishes I've ever seen as a would-be game-winning shot was first ruled good for Cornell before being waved off.
Going out to a minimum wage protest I didn't know exactly what to expect, but fast food mascot costumes made for a unique shot on a freezing afternoon.
Feature hunting was a part of the job here, especially during slow news times. I stopped at Thomas Park in Marion one afternoon and a truck pulled up beside me with snow bikes in the back. The snow was still fresh in the trees so I followed them in the trails back into the woods for this moment.I spent the entire high school football season following the Iowa City Regina team in their quest to build the longest win streak in state history. It all culminated in with victory at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls to break the record. This is one of my outtakes from after the semifinal game.
