When Angela Linden first told her father she was going to attend nursing school, he asked her why, and Linden responded that she wanted to help people.
“I thought about that conversation over and over,” Linden said regarding her latest career move, opening a Massage Heights Retreat in Coralville to provide therapeutic massage therapy and skin treatment services.
“Massage therapy has a healing component that is integrated with and complimentary to traditional medicine,” Linden said. “It’s aligned with my commitment to help others live a life of health and wellness.”
Linden’s quest to help others find wellness progressed from the emergency room, as a critical care nurse, to the boardroom, as the CEO of a regional health center in western Iowa. The long-time healthcare advocate is leading the expansion of San Antonio-based Massage Heights to the Corridor.
On Dec. 18, Linden opened the franchise company’s 100th location in the Iowa River Landing development.
Massage Heights, founded by husband and wife Wayne and Shane Evans in 2004, initially expanded outside of Texas in 2007 with a retreat in West Des Moines. There are seven locations in and around Des Moines, Ankeny and Ames.
Linden’s retreat is the first in Eastern Iowa.
Linden said after she narrowed her focus to massage therapy, she was attracted to Massage Heights because of the infrastructure in place for franchise owners.
“It has a strong business model for helping people achieve wellness through professional, affordable and convenient massage therapy services,” she said.
Massage Heights offers its services on a membership basis. Members have access to special rates on basic massage and facial services as well as various add-on therapies and can earn points towards member rewards.
Services may be accessed at any Massage Heights location around the country seven days a week.
“Massage used to be considered as something only for people with high discretionary income who went to the spa as a treat,” Linden said. “Now there is evidence that it’s an important part of a health and wellness regimen.”
Linden said the benefits of regular therapeutic message include, among other things, lower blood pressure, a boosted immune system and reduced depression.
The Coralville Massage Heights Retreat employs 16 massage therapists, skin therapists and “lifestyle consultants.” All massage and skin therapists are state-licensed.
Linden plans to expand her business with a second location in Cedar Rapids.
“My Cedar Rapids clients already are excited about having a closer location,” she said. “It’s great to bring these services to the community.”
