Iowa’s Healthiest State Initiative announced a new “seal of approval” program Monday that will highlight opportunities to keep Iowans active throughout the year. As part of the privately led and publicly endorsed effort, organizers say eligible walks, runs, swims, bike rides and other events across Iowa will be endorsed and promoted by the initiative. “One of the goals of the Healthiest State Initiative is to shine a spotlight on the great things Iowans are doing to improve health and well-being, and to get Iowans to join them,” said Ric Jurgens, the initiative’s board chairman. To become endorsed by the initiative, event organizers can go to the iowahealthieststate.com/endorse Web site and submit basic information. Events with the endorsement will be asked to promote the Healthiest State Walk on Oct. 8, he said.

On another health-related issue Monday, the Iowa Department of Public Health’s Community Transformation Grant has partnered with the Iowa Sports Foundation to promote Live Healthy Iowa’s 10 Week Challenge. Live Healthy Iowa offers wellness challenges that help promote increased physical activity and healthier eating, as well as promoting team-based competitions designed to motivate individuals to make positive lifestyle changes. All team members receive incentives for their participation. For the $20 registration fee, participants receive a personal online tracking page, weekly activity and nutrition tips, opportunities for prizes, a Live Healthy Iowa shirt, and a one-year magazine subscription. This year’s 10 week challenge begins Jan. 27 and runs through April 4, with sign-up information at www.livehealthyiowa.org.

“CONDITION” SPEECH REBUTTAL: Leaders of the CCI Action Fund say hundreds of Iowans will converge on the state Capitol building Tuesday to challenge Gov. Terry Branstad’s “pro-corporate agenda. CCI members plan to deliver a “progressive-populist” response to Branstad’s “Condition of the State” address. The “People First Iowa – The Time Is Now” day of action will serve as a direct challenge to Branstad’s approach to state government, said Debbie Bunka, a CCI Action Fund member from Ames, who contended the GOP governor and “the corporate lobby are taking Iowa in the wrong direction.” Iowa CCI Action Fund members also will meet with Des Moines Sen. Jack Hatch, the Democratic candidate for governor, on Tuesday afternoon.
