The Iowa Department of Transportation will open a new driver's license station in southwest Cedar Rapids, replacing the existing location in northeast Cedar Rapids.

The agency on Friday said the station at 3726 Queen Court SW, Suites 203 - 208, will open at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14. The current driverís license station at the K-Mart Plaza, 152 Collins Road NE, will be open through Friday, Jan. 10.

The DOT said the new station, near Edgewood Road SW at Highway 30, will provide more customer space, convenient access to routes for customers who need to complete drive tests and the ability to conduct on-site commercial driverís license skills testing.

The new station will offer a more open and flexible floor plan, making it easier to use the self-service kiosk option to renew a driverís license or identification card.

The current driver's license station will close at 5 p.m. on Jan. 10. Iowa DOT staff will be moving all the equipment to the new site over the weekend in preparation for opening on Jan. 14.

The DOT driver's license station moved to the Kmart plaza in 1994, combining two previous locations in Cedar Rapids and Marion.

The DOT needed to move the station when it elected not to renew a lease with the owner of the shopping center, RCG Ventures of Atlanta, Ga. The latter is planning to renovate the 150,000-square-foot strip center that housed Kmart and other retailers.
