The newspaper has oft been called “the daily miracle,” and it’s true. The efforts of hundreds of employee-owners build on generations of experience and relationships with news sources and business partners, using millions of dollars’ worth of machinery to create these pages of news and advertising. We all are working collectively to inform, create context and connect the people of Eastern Iowa.

More than 300 independent contractor carriers bring your newspaper on the final leg of its journey, hand-delivering to your homes across our 16-county distribution area. It adds up to more than 360,000 papers delivered per week, in the pre-dawn hours.

But alas, places that are familiar and easy to reach on a warm summer morning can become dangerous in the ice and snow of winter. So we implore you, dear subscriber, to do your best to clear your driveways, sidewalks and steps to help your carrier reach your delivery location safely each morning.

Neighbors, carry the spirit of the holiday season through these cold months ahead — take the snowblower down the whole block and back up the other side; help the elderly couple across the street with their driveway; employ the enterprising youth of the neighborhood who are brave enough to knock on your door and ask for the job. And if you are pleased with your carrier’s service, you can share your compliments and kudos with them through the customer care team at (800) 397-8333. Those calls are deeply appreciated by all.

And we thank you, in advance, for your patience when the weather hazards dictate delayed delivery. While the e-edition is not the same thing as holding these pages in your hands, a growing number of you have instant access to the digital versions of these pages through http://mygreengazette.com.

So, if you like, snuggle up with your computer, right after you’re done shoveling the walk.
