Iowa State Patrol troopers are trying to figure out what caused a man to drive across a farm field and crash into a fence Wednesday afternoon.

The crash happened just west of Kalona along Highway 22 shortly after 3 p.m.. Investigators said the man's vehicle, which was hitched to a cattle trailer, drove diagonally across a field before hitting a fence and bursting into flames. The accident scene was several hundred yards from the roadway.

Troopers said the man may have suffered some sort of medical condition, which caused him to drive across the field. It's not clear if any animals were inside the trailer at the time of the crash.

Authorities aren't releasing the man's name until family members are notified of his death.
