Surgery Center Cedar Rapids will expand its facility by 7,000 square feet, adding an entrance, two operating rooms and 12 patient care rooms.

Cedar Rapids-based Kleiman Construction started the $3.4 million project in late November and it is expected to be completed by late summer 2014. InVision Architecture from Waterloo is the architectural and design firm for the project.

"We've seen growth across the board," said Scott Kallemeyn, Surgery Center Cedar Rapids administrator.

Surgery Center Cedar Rapids, 1075 1st Ave. SE., is a designated ambulatory surgical facility designed to meet the needs of patients in a cost-effective manner.

The surgery center is a partnership including UnityPoint Health - St. Luke’s Hospital and more than 100 Cedar Rapids community surgeons and anesthesiologists who provide multispecialty surgical and procedural services.

Surgery Center Cedar Rapids performs about 7,400 procedures each year, Kallemeyn said, adding that the expansion will allow it to perform an additional 500 procedures annually. Since 2003, the center has performed more than 64,000 procedures.

Kallemeyn also anticipates hiring an additional seven to eight staff members.

Kallemeyn said that the surgery center is not maxed out, but there are days that are very busy.

“We're positioned well at this time," Kallemeyn said. "It's really a good fit, especially with all of the changes in the health care landscape, with more to come."
