A Vinton business was awarded three roofing contracts for The Eastern Iowa Airport on Monday by the Cedar Rapids Airport Commission.
Pella Roofing & Insulation, 2401 66th St., was awarded the contract for the East Cargo Facility roof rehabilitation project with a bid of $135,885. Competing bids were submitted by Helle Urethane Insulation & Roofing, Manchester ($149,250), R&A Contracting, St. Peters, Mo. ($157,860), and Black Hawk Roof Co., Cedar Falls ($201,522).
Pella Roofing was awarded a $247,900 contract for the Administration Building and FAA Airways Facility roof replacement project. Competing bids were submitted by Black Hawk Roof, Cedar Falls ($256,068), T&K Roofing & Sheet Metal, Ely ($286,551), Jim Giese Commercial Roofing, Dubuque ($343,457) and Advance Builders, Cedar Rapids ($345,608).
The commission also awarded Pella Roofing a $54,930 contract to repair the FAA Airways Building roof. Companies also submitting bids were City Construction Group, Iowa City ($90,800) and Tricon Construction Group, Dubuque, ($132,740).
Commissioners asked Airport Operations Director Sara Freese to explain the margin between the bids submitted by Pella Roofing and competitors. Freese said the Vinton company’s lower labor rates accounted for a majority of the difference.
Freese also told the commissioners that Pella Roofing has performed work for the airport in the past, noting its role in storm repairs.
Separately, the commission learned that the airport and the Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival are in the early stages of exploring a possible air show.
Airport Director Tim Bradshaw said an initial air show might involve a static display of aircraft, potentially leading to aerobatics over the Cedar River or the Coralville Lake.
