The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled forward Jayson Megna from their American Hockey League farm team in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Thursday. Megna is expected to play Friday against the New York Islanders, which would make him the 13th former Cedar Rapids RoughRider to play in the National Hockey League.
Megna, 23, played two seasons for the RoughRiders and was the team’s captain in 2010-11. He went on to play one season for the University of Nebraska-Omaha before signing as a free agent with the Penguins in 2012.
The Northbrook, Ill., native played last season for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Other RoughRiders alumni to play in the NHL are Matt Tennyson (San Jose Sharks), Tommy Wingels (San Jose Sharks), Alex Stalock (San Jose Sharks), Richard Bachman (Dallas Stars), Derek Peltier (Colorado Avalanche), Teddy Purcell (Los Angeles Kings/Tampa Bay Lightning), Alec Martinez (Los Angeles Kings), Justin Abdelkader (Detroit Red Wings), Matt Donovan (New York Islanders), Andy Miele (Phoenix Coyotes), David Moss (Calgary Flames/Phoenix Coyotes) and Casey Wellman (Minnesota Wild).
Wingels, Stalock, Purcell, Martinez, Abdelkader, Donovan and Moss remain in the NHL at the moment.
