GIVING BACK: After the 2008 flood, the Czech Republic delivered $500,000 in flood relief to Cedar Rapids. Now, a joint effort by the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library, Sokol Cedar Rapids and St. Wenceslaus Church has raised $50,000 toward restoring a flood-ravaged library in Decin, a town of 50,000 in the Czech Republic that was among communities hit during flooding in June.
TAKE A BOW: Cedar Rapids is ranked No. 1 among Iowa cities and 29th among the nation’s Top 100 Best Places to Live ranking by Livability.com and Richard Florida’s Martin Prosperity Institute at the University of Toronto. The latter is home to a prominent think tank that studies the role of location, place and city-regions in global economic prosperity. The categories of amenities, demographics, economics, education, health care, housing, social and civic capital, transportation and infrastructure are weighed. Iowa City ranked 46th nationally.
EVIDENCE: A Gazette analysis of police records shows alcohol-related arrests by University of Iowa and Iowa City police dropped significantly in several categories since the 21-only bar law took effect in June 2010.
