Metal, bottles and anything trash — volunteers Monday morning hiked along the Cedar River between First Ave and the Czech Village bridge, picking up all the garbage they could find.
The 10 volunteers were the first group of the week representing Americorps, the Department of Corrections, and Cummins Central Power.
Volunteers are welcome to help clean the riverbanks for the rest of the week between 8 a.m. and noon, and should call the Cedar Rapids Parks Department at 319-286-5760.
“It’s over very rough terrain and volunteers will need sturdy shoes and whether gloves,” said Daniel Gibbins, the parks superintendent.
Volunteers Monday picked up enough trash to fill a truck. The trash washed up on the banks after flooding earlier this year.
“We plan on doing this on some level every year from here on out,” Gibbins said. “Our river is a wonderful resource, and we want to be good stewards of it.”
