After spending several years in Phoenix, Dusty Waldron and his wife, Stephanie, wanted to relocate to the Netherlands so their now 3-year-old son could get to see where his mother grew up in Belgium, where her relatives remain.
The couple sought some help for their big move to the Netherlands and their search will air this week on the popular reality show series “House Hunters International” on Home and Garden Television.
Dusty Waldron, a Cedar Rapids native, is a branch manager for C.H. Robinson, a Minnesota-based logistics company that agreed to open an office in Rotterdam, Holland when Waldron wanted to move.
The television show helps participants find their ideal home and is a spin-off of HGTV’s original “House Hunters”, for home buyers moving within the United States. The Waldron’s episode will air Sept. 19 at 9:30 p.m. central time.
The TV show’s crew filmed the couple in Cedar Rapids while visiting family and friends in November 2012. The crew shot in several locations throughout Cedar Rapids including a local restaurant and the home of Waldron’s father, Dennis Waldron.
A crew spent several days the next week filming in Rotterdam. Dusty Waldron said the experience was fun and often filled with laughter for his family, all who were not used to acting in front of the camera.
“It’s definitely not live, because you have amateur actors trying to be serious with cameras and directors in their face,” he said. “It was hilarious and the crew was so patient with us as we would break out laughing all the time. My son, Logan, had to cause about 20 percent of the retakes.”
Dennis Waldron said now that he knows about all the filming it takes to make an episode, he often wonders of all the footage gathered, what ended up on the cutting room floor.
“To me it’s like the movies and like anything else you watch,” the 66-year-old said. ”How much of it is done right then and there or later when they edit and stuff like that.”
Waldron said his family will be watching the episode when it airs this week. Dusty Waldron said since the show isn’t available in Rotterdam, they’ll watch the episode on a DVD the show will send them.
