The state's office of media production has launched an online tool that will allow local media production work force and support service companies to post their skills.

Hosted by Produce Iowa, the web-based directory, called ReelCrew, is part of the ReelScout platform, an online software tool created for film offices to provide crew and location management.

The software is a standard in the industry for film offices, said Liz Gilman, Produce Iowa executive producer. The ReelScout platform is used by more than 60 film offices and commissions in the country.

"For this first phase, we have launched the crew because it's important for Iowa to inventory who we have here and what we can offer people," Gilman said. "The old-school way would be to have a production guide and it would be a little booklet, and they used to print them up every year and they would send them out."

The book contained listings of makeup artists, production assistants, directors or hotels all support services around production crews, she said.

"What's great about this (website) is that it's available 24-7, everybody can log on and find this information and then everyone can update their listings continually," Gilman said.

After Gilman has built up a database of professionals, Produce Iowa will release the information to the public with a search engine on its website.

Registration is free.
