One of my votes for Iowa City school board will be for Brian Kirschling. My decision is based on talking with him, listening carefully to his comments at forums and from reading his views/concerns/goals on his website (kirschling

forboard.blogspot.com).

Here is some of what I have learned. One of several concerns Kirschling has is about any lack of equal opportunity for some students in parts of our school community. He is dedicated to enlisting help from community leaders, parents and teachers and to listening to their concerns and ideas for providing equitable opportunities for their students.

I’m impressed with the research he has done to see how other similar school districts across the country have worked through those disparity issues. His idea that “we don’t have to reinvent the wheel; we can build on what other districts have done” and adapt ideas to our own district needs indicates a practical and logical beginning for meeting some district goals. He is forward-looking and searches for creative and cooperative ways to help this district maintain the best of what we have and also identify ways to improve.

I applaud the way he identifies and addresses a problem without rancor or argumentative rhetoric. He is informed, passionate, yet calm in approach, and searches for answers from a variety of sources. He will work cooperatively and effectively with community members and other board members.
