Offensive lineman Jacob Newborg is a couple of games into his junior season at West Lyon High School.

About a month ago, Iowa offered him a football scholarship.

"Kirk pulled me and my parents into his office and told me I was the type of player that they wanted for the Hawkeyes," Newborg, a 6-4, 271-pound guard, told HawkeyeReport.com. He kind of saw it coming, but "I kind of felt it in my gut, but I wasn't sure."

Newborg gave it a little less than three weeks before committing to the Hawkeyes, giving Iowa its first commit for the 2015 class. Newborg had no other offers, it being fairly early in the recruiting calendar for '15s, but he did have interest from Iowa State, Northern Iowa and Northwestern.

"It was just the way their coaches coach, I guess," Newborg said when asked what it was about Iowa. "They coach like my coaches do at home. I always wanted to play at Iowa."

Newborg is the first commitment for the 2015 class. The recruiting process has kicked up in speed the last few seasons. Iowa already has 13 commitments for the 2014 class. Last winter for the first time, the Iowa coaching staff put together a board for high school sophomores, which would've included Newborg and Landan and Levi Paulson, twins and O-linemen for Woodbury Central. They also have offers from the Hawkeyes.

Right now, Iowa has told Newborg it's not sure which side of the ball he will end up. He has inside O-linemen size, but also might have defensive tackle quickness.

"He has always been a big, physical kid, but once he got going in the weight room and did the things the right way, he started to really improve and grow into his body," West Lyon coach Jay Rozeboom told HawkeyeReport.com. "He has this attitude that he likes to win the one-on-ones whether in practice or games, you name it. He wants to win every one-on-one battle."

Will he lend a hand in the recruitment of the Paulson twins? Landan is an offensive tackle prospect at 6-6, 267 pounds. Levi might also be at 6-5, 248.

"I've just talked to them casually," Newborg said. "I haven't talked to them about recruiting. It's their decision, not mine. I'll mention it to them for sure."
